Job description


GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs routine general library maintenance and Janitorial duties related to the direct and/or indirect operation of any DHCLS branch or departmental location, including janitorial, custodian, and maintenance, at any of the Dothan Houston County Library Locations. Special projects may also be assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general written/oral direction and supervision of the DHCLS location manager, who issues instructions and checks work performed. Requires the ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision. Exercising independent judgment and initiative is necessary.
JOB DUTIES: 

  • Early morning hours and Saturday availability
  • Flexibility of hours, as needed
  • Flexibility of location 
  • Able to bend, stoop, climb, reach, lift (up to 50 lbs)
  • Assist in all areas of Janitorial, Custodial, and Maintenance 
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop, and clean all types of flooring, including sidewalks and patios.
  • Window washing
  • Bathroom and breakroom cleaning
  • Knowledge of safety and sanitation procedures, including appropriate mixing of cleaning chemicals
  • Janitorial/custodian/maintenance procedures
  • Familiar with needed supplies and ordering procedures
  • Able to follow a schedule of tasks requiring attention monthly, quarterly, and yearly. Example: Replacement of batteries 
  • Experience in the operation of: carpet cleaners, vacuum sweepers, blowers, pressure washers, etc
  • Able to perform general maintenance, cleaning, upkeep, and repair of facilities and their contents to keep them clean and in generally good working condition
  • Display initiative to follow up with and complete tasks, such as bringing special projects to the manager’s attention.
  • Basic maintenance skills
  • Replace light bulbs and clean light fixtures
  • Replace filters (refrigerator, vacuums, sweepers, etc)
  • Light painting, as needed
  • General/Basic electrical 
                                             
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Light maintenance skills; custodial skills; ability to read and understand English; ability to learn and master existing and emerging trends in custodial work; ability to use hardware/software and other equipment. Must have critical thinking skills. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to complete assigned tasks with minimal direction. Requires the ability to work mornings before the library opens to the public.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Preferably two (2) years’ experience in a related work environment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. May require driving to various locations.
