What is a painter helper?

Painter helpers are workers who assist painters by preparing surfaces, gathering and moving materials, setting up equipment, and cleaning up job sites. They may sand or scrape surfaces, mask off areas to protect them from paint, mix paints, and help with the application process under the supervision of experienced painters. Painter helpers play a critical role in ensuring painting projects run smoothly and efficiently, supporting both residential and commercial painting tasks.

What does a painter helper do?

A painter helper assists painters, stucco masons, and plasterers with a wide variety of tasks to help complete a project quickly and efficiently. As a painter helper, your typical duties involve applying plaster, removing old paint, and preparing the work area. You may also pour chemical solutions into stripping tanks and use power tools to clear surfaces before painting or plastering them. To become a painter helper, you typically only need relevant work experience, such as on-the-job training under the supervision of a more experienced painter. Some employers may also require a high school diploma or GED certificate and the completion of a formal training program in painting. Additional qualifications include mechanical skills to use power tools like buffers and sanders, attention to detail for mixing and matching paint colors, and the ability to execute written and oral instructions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a painter helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Painter Helper, you need basic knowledge of paint preparation, surface cleaning, and safety procedures, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with tools such as sanders, scrapers, and ladders, as well as adherence to safety guidelines like OSHA standards, is important. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong teamwork skills help Painter Helpers support lead painters efficiently. These abilities ensure high-quality results, a safe work environment, and smooth collaboration on painting projects.

What are some common challenges faced by painter helpers on the job, and how can they be managed?

Painter Helpers often encounter challenges such as working in confined or elevated spaces, exposure to paint fumes, and managing physical tasks like sanding, taping, or carrying supplies. To manage these, it's important to use proper personal protective equipment (PPE), follow safety protocols, and maintain effective communication with the lead painter and team members. Being proactive in preparing surfaces and organizing materials can also help streamline workflow and minimize on-the-job issues.

The Highlights:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facility Operations for the Loop campus, the painter will ensure the proper and timely completion of all incoming electronic work orders, estimates, inspection list items, and special projects. This work involves the maintenance and repair of all exterior and interior finishes and surfaces for DePaul buildings, fixtures, and equipment, including but not limited to doors, walls, ceilings, windows, floors, concrete, and mechanical equipment. All work will be performed in accordance with the accepted procedures and techniques of the painter's union trade.

What You'll Do:

Painting and surface finishing:
* Perform proper surface preparation prior to the application of finishing products. This may include, but is not limited to, drywall taping, removal of abandoned tape and hardware, sanding, filing, grinding and wire wheeling, scraping, patching, cleaning, sealing, priming, caulking, power washing, and sandblasting.
* Apply decorative and industrial finish products of all types, including paints, stains, varnishes, urethanes, sealers, protective coatings, and textures such as safety sand.
* Perform surface repair, preparation, and application of paint, varnish, stain, or enamel to decorate and protect various surfaces, including doors, walls, ceilings, and the like.
* Perform proper jobsite setup, including the strategic use of painter's canvas, plastic, masking tape, and similar materials to ensure proper protection of the areas surrounding the jobsite.
* Properly maintain University-owned tools and equipment. Due to the nature of their work, painters must make concerted efforts to clean and maintain all provided tools and equipment (especially paint sprayers) after use, so that they are not damaged by drying paint or other chemicals.

* Review the electronic work order system daily for purposes of estimating and scheduling work. Participate in departmental meetings and in safety and compliance training throughout the year.

* Follow established schedules to ensure and maintain a high level of painting services.

Workplace Safety: Employees of Facility Operations are expected to follow all safety rules and regulations set forth by applicable governmental agencies and established by the University. This includes but is not limited to matters related to hazard communication (SDS), ladder safety, walking and working surfaces, slips, trips, and falls, mechanical lift use, asbestos-containing materials, confined spaces, electrical safety including lockout/tagout, respirator fit and use, personal protective equipment, and the information contained in the University's emergency and chemical hygiene plans. Employees are expected to refer to the Facility Operations Employee Manual and the Environmental Health and Safety website for additional information related to safety programs, practices, and expectations.

What You'll Need:

  • Good Standing with Painters Union
  • The painter will be required at all times to perform their own labor and lifting. This may include lifting heavy loads, within limits considered manageable and safe, such as unloading supply trucks and transporting all trade-related equipment and materials, including tool carts that may weigh up to 400 pounds. The painter is also responsible for cleaning their job sites, materials, and workshops as needed.
  • This position also requires the painter to have the physical ability to work for extended periods while standing, stooping, bending, or kneeling, and to work safely from ladders, scaffolds, roofs, and multi-level platforms.
  • The painter must be able to operate a variety of mechanical equipment, including scissor lifts and any other equipment rented or owned by the University.
  • Knowledge of painting principles and standard practices in the application, preparation, maintenance, and repair of various surfaces.
  • Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in the painting trades, including sanders, grinders, hand tools, spray equipment, scaffolds, and ladders.
  • Ability to operate a variety of powered plant equipment and machinery necessary for the job.
  • Sufficient oral, written, and computer skills to communicate effectively with other trades personnel, management, and customers, and the ability to maintain a proper, professional appearance and image while performing assigned duties and responsibilities.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is: $56.30/hr.

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
