Job description

PAINT & COATINGS TECHNICIAN

As a member of the construction projects and facilities team, the paint & coatings technician mixes, strips, paints, and details advanced paint systems, prepares metallic substrates via abrasion and etchants, applies sealants/adhesives, maintains spraying equipment, and uses precision tools like calipers while supporting safety, quality, and delivery improvements. You will have the opportunity to drive positive changes in a fast-paced, low-drag environment. This technician owns tasks and projects from start to finish, with the goal of making the SpaceX campus a world-class test facility that can support the mission of enabling life beyond Earth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and coordinate ticket system requests for paint projects across the site to ensure timely and quality execution of work
  • Prepare, prime, sand, seal, patch, and paint steel surfaces, buildings, and fixtures utilizing all types of painting materials such as varnish, lacquer, shellac, enamel, latex, epoxy, waterproofing, and heat-resistant finishes
  • Tape, float, paint, and repair wall finishes and apply texture
  • Operate, clean, and maintain all painting equipment, including brushes, rollers, sprayers, electrostatic sprayers, and pumps
  • Safely store and label all materials on a daily basis
  • Erect scaffolding, rigging, and ladders as necessary in a manner consistent with safety codes
  • Operate and use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely
  • Apply finishes to a wide variety of surfaces

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 1+ years of experience as a painter in a residential, commercial, industrial, or manufacturing environment
  • Experience painting projects indoors and outdoors

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in commercial and industrial painting practices and processes, including the properties and application of paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, paint removers, and related materials
  • Familiarity with applicable code requirements, methods and practices for maintaining tools, machinery, and equipment
  • 5+ years of experience as a painter in a residential, commercial, industrial, or manufacturing environment
  • Experience painting internal and external surfaces
  • Ability to safely operate aerial platforms, lifts, man lifts, and heavy equipment

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Role may require extended hours, weekend work and shift schedules, that vary depending on site operational needs; flexibility required
  • Physical dexterity and the ability to lift heavy objects are required in this position (up to 25lbs unassisted)
  • Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting the upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings, and climbing hand over hand
  • Ability to work at elevated heights
  • Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments - heat, cold, rain
  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
  • Ability to comfortably wear breathing air respirators on a frequent basis, occasionally for extended durations, as required by the position
