Essential Job Duties
Join our passionate Facilities team as a Painter in the Trade Shop, where your skills will help keep our campus vibrant, safe, and inviting. In this role, you'll use your expertise in painting, finishing, and drywall repair to maintain the beauty and functionality of our buildings and spaces.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare surfaces by cleaning, sanding, patching, priming, and ensuring optimal conditions for painting
  • Paint a variety of surfaces, including walls, ceilings, casework, fixtures, handrails, bollards, and equipment
  • Perform advanced surface preparation, including sanding, applying wood filler, Bondo, caulking, and completing drywall repairs.
  • Match paint colors and finishes to maintain consistency throughout campus facilities.
  • Mix and tint paints accurately using specialized equipment
  • Inspect work areas, materials, and vehicles regularly to ensure safety and compliance with hazardous material regulations
  • Review plans, product specifications, and PPE requirements to ensure proper application and disposal procedures
  • Report safety concerns, infractions, accidents, and injuries promptly in accordance with University policy
  • Assist with power washing and other maintenance projects across campus as needed
  • Collaborate with other Trade Shops units to support broader maintenance and repair initiatives
  • Lift up to 60 pounds frequently and up to 90 plus pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and the general public, understand and follow verbal and written instructions and other communications related to work assignments and other matters.

Other Responsibilities
  • This position is designated as Essential Personnel and is required to report to work during adverse weather conditions or emergencies, even when the University is operating on an alternative schedule. May include assisting with snow and ice removal as directed by a supervisor.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Journeyman-level commercial painting experience
  • Experience working within multi-trade environments
  • Skilled in the mixing of paints and in matching and blending colors

Required License or Certification
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
