What is paid writing?

Paid writing refers to any type of writing work where the writer receives financial compensation for their content. This can include freelance writing, copywriting, blogging, technical writing, journalism, and content creation for businesses or publications. Paid writers are typically tasked with creating articles, marketing materials, web content, or other written documents according to client or employer requirements. Payment methods vary and may be per word, per project, or hourly. The field offers flexibility and the opportunity to work in a variety of industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paid writer?

To thrive as a Paid Writer, you need excellent writing, grammar, and research skills, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (like WordPress), SEO tools, and style guides such as AP or Chicago Manual is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and strong communication skills help writers tailor content to different audiences and collaborate effectively with clients or editors. These skills ensure the delivery of engaging, accurate, and targeted content that meets client objectives and industry standards.

Effective time management and strong organizational skills are essential for balancing workloads and avoiding burnout. Additionally, clear communication with editors and clients helps ensure expectations are met and revisions are handled efficiently. Are you ready to play a key role in winning major infrastructure projects? As a Proposal Writer within our East Bidding Team, you will craft compelling, high-quality proposals that communicate our vision, strategy, and technical strengths. Your writing skills and attention to detail will be instrumental in developing winning submissions that drive our business growth.

You will collaborate with experienced engineers, estimators, and managers in a fast-paced environment that values teamwork, creativity, and precision. This role is office-based to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and alignment with proposal schedules and corporate objectives.

Join us and help shape the future of our projects.

What you will be doing
  • Develop and write clear, persuasive, and compliant proposal content for major infrastructure and construction pursuits across Canada.
  • Collaborate with technical experts and project managers to translate engineering and construction concepts into concise, client-focused narratives.
  • Integrate established win themes, differentiators, and client priorities into proposal content to ensure alignment with the pursuit strategy.
  • Participate in proposal kick-off and planning sessions.
  • Prepare and edit project references, resumes, management plans, and other sections that demonstrate experience and execution capability.
  • Contribute to maintaining proposal content libraries, ensuring narratives remain accurate, current, and aligned with company standards.
  • Use proposal management tools, content repositories, and AI-assisted systems to improve consistency and efficiency.
  • Review RFP and RFQ requirements, ensure full compliance, and contribute to strategic, results-driven responses that strengthen competitive positioning and support higher win rates.
  • Adapt technical material for alternate uses such as white papers, marketing materials, or methodology statements.
  • Collaborate with proposal teams, designers, and document controllers to deliver polished, on-brand submissions on schedule.
What we are looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum three years of experience in proposal writing or coordination for engineering, construction, or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong writing, editing, and quality assurance skills with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and persuasive messaging.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook) and familiar with proposal management or content automation tools.
  • Ability to interpret technical information (tunnels, bridges, highways, transit, water infrastructure) and communicate it clearly to varied audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure, managing priorities and meeting tight deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Working knowledge of French; bilingual proficiency (English/French) preferred.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and document control protocols for competitive bidding.
  • Experience supporting major public-sector pursuits (e.g., Infrastructure Ontario, ADM, Metrolinx, VFPA, MTMD, CDPQ Infra, etc.).
  • Familiarity with alternative delivery models such as design-build, progressive design-build, Alliance, and CMAR is an asset.

  • Experience with AI assisted writing, compliance tracking, or knowledge management tools.
  • Familiarity with layout and graphic design software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Illustrator) is an asset.
