Job description

Summary

This position ensures that all outbound freight and ground shipments are inspected, packed, and prepared with precision and care. The role contributes to shipment accuracy, product integrity, and timely fulfillment by enforcing packaging standards, communicating discrepancies, and maintaining a clean and efficient outbound staging process.

This role involves verifying pick tickets, communicating with teammates, and executing safe packing methods that reduce damage risk—particularly for vulnerable materials like pipe. The specialist serves as a key link between warehouse operations, logistics, order processor and customer satisfaction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Freight Responsibilities:

  • Prepare pallets for shipping by verifying labeling, shrink-wrapping, and color coding per carrier assignment.
  • Apply color-coded carrier labels for efficient trailer staging (e.g., Pitt/Ohio – Pink, R&L – Orange).
  • Mark order numbers clearly on each pallet in large, legible writing.
  • Adhere to standard pipe packaging procedures—including upright standing of pipe to prevent ovalizing.
  • Load pallets into designated trailers or staging zones ensuring proper stacking and weight distribution.
  • Manage pallet flow to prevent staging area congestion.
  • Report damaged packaging, smeared labels, or packing concerns to the Team Lead.
  • Maintain adherence to all floor safety protocols and equipment usage.

Ground Shipment Responsibilities:

  • Conduct visual inspections of product and packaging integrity prior to sealing.
  • Use two-way radios to communicate with pickers about missing or incorrect items.
  • Package items using appropriate materials to support consolidation, minimize void space, and ensure safe delivery.
  • Route completed packages to shipping systems (e.g., conveyors, roller lines) in alignment with carrier type.
  • Label and document all containers with appropriate identification, weights, and dimensions.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Familiarity with both pallet-based freight and small-parcel ground shipping methods.
  • Ability to identify discrepancies and communicate professionally with team members in real time.
  • Strong understanding of part number verification, pick ticket interpretation, and documentation protocols.
  • Solid knowledge of product protection and packaging materials to avoid damage in transit.
  • Effective use of radios and warehouse communication tools.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting broader team productivity.

Work Environment

  • Active warehouse setting with regular exposure to forklifts, conveyors, and variable temperatures.
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and handling of boxed or wrapped freight.
  • Use of PPE, including gloves and steel-toe shoes, required.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly lift up to 50 lbs unassisted.
  • Capable of maneuvering heavy products during repackaging or pallet staging.
  • Read, write, and interpret shipping information clearly and consistently.

Schedule

  • Standard hours: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Peak season: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (as needed)

Minimum Qualifications
