Crozier Fine Arts is seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated Freelance Packing Technician to join our Carpentry Department. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and integrity of all artworks within the carpentry department by preparing insulation, cushioning, and packing materials, and operating shop equipment according to design and safety specifications.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

In this role, you will:

  • Custom Packaging Production: Prepare insulation, cushioning foams, and inner packing materials according to a variety of design specifications to create high-quality, protective packaging solutions for fine art, furniture, antiques, etc.

  • Operational Collaboration: Collaborate cohesively with the Art Handling, Warehouse, and Transportation teams, providing essential assistance for transfers and the loading/unloading trucks.

  • Safety & Quality Compliance: Ensure strict compliance with safety standards and shop protocols for handling artworks from point of entry through to final crate transfer.

  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate professional shop machinery, including, but not limited to table saws, radial arm saws, sanders, pneumatic staplers.

  • Specialized Art Packing: Execute technical packing methods including:

    • 2D Museum Packing: Tray construction, flat work packing, inner box builds (foam core/wood), and oz clip packing into travel frames.

    • 3D Museum Packing: T-frame packing (cleats, slats, etc.), cavity packing (custom cut foam cavities), tray & brace packing large sculpture, furniture packing, and additional 3D object packing into break-away/exploding crates

    • Rigging: Assist with rigging and large object packing as required.

  • Logistics Support: Handle and move both packaged and unpackaged artifacts, facilitating the transfer of finished works from the shop to the warehouse.

What You'll Bring (Skills & Qualifications)

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a Crate Shop or Art Handling environment.

  • Strong knowledge of general shop safety and the proficient use of power tools; prior experience with fine art interior packing (tray packing, travel frames, etc.) is a significant plus.

  • Proven ability in attention to detail and effective communication; must be a self-starter who thrives in a team-oriented setting.

  • Familiarity with industry standards for packing, crating, handling, and transportation.

  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (75+ lbs) and maintain physical stamina for bending, kneeling, and standing throughout the shift.
