Job description

GENERAL FUNCTION: The machine operator sets up and operates metal fabrication machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, saws and presses to cut, bend, straighten, and form metal plates, sheets and structural shapes according to blueprints and specifications.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities:
Fabricates such items as angles, brackets, eye beams, curved plates and foundations. May fabricate aluminum louvers, hand-railings or walkways.
Reads and interprets blueprints, engineering specifications and shop orders to determine machine setup, production methods, and sequence of operations.
Selects, positions and secures dies, blades, cutters and fixtures onto machine, using rule, square, shims, templates, hand tools and built-in gauges.
Adjust controls to set and regulate machining factors.
Uses instruments to locate and mark bending or cutting lines and reference points on work piece.
Positions work piece by using various items such as stops, guides, layout marks, cutting blades and hoists.
Starts machine and observes in order to make adjustments as needed.
Inspects work for compliance with blueprints, drawings and or specifications.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Prior experience, as a machinist is helpful.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & TRAINING: Prior experience as a machine operator in a shipbuilding or marine fabrication environment is preferred.
