Position Summary
The Material Planner owns material readiness visibility for an assigned scope - tracking availability by project or job, surfacing shortages before they impact the schedule, and keeping planners, warehouse, and procurement working from one accurate material picture. This is an information and coordination role: the Material Planner statuses, prioritizes, and escalates material readiness so the production schedule holds, while material coordinators execute all physical movement. The role's measure of success is not how many shortages it chases, but how steadily shortage-driven disruption shrinks.
Reports To: VP Production Planning & CI
Work Location: 8310 McHard Road, Houston, TX 77053
Position Responsibilities
  • Own material readiness status for assigned scope: monitor availability and readiness by module, engine, or project, and maintain a published Ready / At Risk / Short status that planners, operations, and leadership trust as the single material truth.
  • Identify constraints before they bite: review material requirements against the production schedule, surface shortages, late deliveries, and missing parts early, and proactively flag upcoming constraints rather than waiting for production to be impacted.
  • Maintain the shortage management process: create and maintain shortage lists with expected receipts, owners, and actions; provide daily readiness updates; and drive each item to closure through the defined escalation process - not informal expediting.
  • Coordinate readiness - information only: direct priorities to warehouse, kitting, and material coordinators so required materials are picked, staged, and available when needed; verify materials are properly identified and associated with the correct production order. All physical movement is executed by material coordinators and warehouse personnel.
  • Chase supply status upstream: work with procurement and suppliers for status on outstanding or delayed material, and feed confirmed dates back into the readiness picture and the planners' schedule risk view.
  • Audit planning parameters on a quarterly cadence: review lead times, order quantities, and safety-stock signals for assigned scope against actual supplier and consumption performance, in coordination with procurement and inventory control - submitting corrections through data governance so the planning data the readiness picture depends on stays true.
  • Support recovery and pull-ahead: during schedule recovery, identify material constraints and opportunities to pull work ahead based on what is actually ready, executing material priorities set by the production planner.
  • Report and participate on cadence: maintain accurate records of status, shortages, receipts, and actions; represent material readiness in daily production planning meetings with risks and recovery actions.
  • Shrink the firefighting: capture recurring shortage causes and feed them to the production planning manager and continuous improvement for prevention - the goal is fewer shortages to chase, quarter over quarter.
  • Support the D365 / ERP implementation, validating material planning functionality during testing and cutover, including full physical and system reconciliation before go-live.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience: 2+ years in material planning, material coordination, production planning support, or inventory control in a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical: Strong Excel proficiency; comfort working from bills of material, shop travelers, and pick lists; accurate, disciplined record-keeping.
  • Systems: Hands-on ERP experience in inventory, planning, and procurement modules.
  • Skills: Strong analytical and spreadsheet capability including building requirement models from raw data; clear communication with production, supply chain, and supplier contacts
  • Working style: Proactive and communicative; comfortable holding priorities under pressure and escalating through defined process; strong daily-cadence discipline.
  • Must be fluent in English, with strong speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
  • US work authorization is a precondition of employment. The company will not consider candidates who require sponsorship for a work-authorized visa.
  • Successful candidate will need to satisfactorily complete pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Desired Qualifications
  • Industry: High-mix, low-volume manufacturing or MRO environments; gas turbine or aerospace, gas turbine package, generator set, or comparable complex-assembly experience a plus.
  • Systems: ERP experience (Microsoft Dynamics 365, SAP, Oracle, or comparable).
  • Regulatory compliance: Familiarity with traceability, material certification, and quality standards applicable to precision manufacturing.
  • Certifications: APICS/ASCM coursework a plus.

Key Skills & Competencies
  • Proactive risk radar - finds the shortage before it finds the schedule.
  • Daily-cadence discipline
  • Coordination without authority
  • Persistence in closure - shortage items driven to done, not to "status updated."
  • Prevention mindset - measures success by fewer shortages to chase, not more chased.
  • Comfort building in ambiguity
