Job description


Packaging Material Handler 

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The purpose of this role is to support the packaging area, bringing the product to the line via forklift and other equipment, as necessary.  

RESPONSIBILTIES: 

  • Produces the required quantity of batched recipes within established specifications and tolerances and according to production plan. 
  • Maintains logs and records of units produced including a record of errors resulting in rejected/discarded materials.
  • Perform pre-operational equipment, preventative maintenance tasks, and process inspections.
  • Perform quality and sanitation functions per Quality Program and Master Sanitation Schedule.
  • Report maintenance and quality opportunities with shift supervisors and/or managers.
  • Interface with plant ERP system to assure inventory control, lot traceability, and tracking.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, orderly work area.

Packaging Material Handler Specific Tasks & Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for bringing product & packaging materials to the packaging line. 
  • Load and unload the hopper feeding the packaging line. 
  • Utilize ERP system for moving in process materials, finished products and finished goods into and out of inventory.
  • Place wrapped pallets in the warehouse racking 
  • Ability to read and prepare materials according to daily production orders 
  • Print labels and stickers to be placed on finished product pallets 
  • Support in the absence of Warehouse Material Handler, loading & unloading materials and or products
  • Follow all quality guidelines, Master Sanitation Schedules and maintain food-safe, sanitary environment.
  • Inspect forklift per inspection schedule and clean/upkeep equipment/forklifts as needed.
  • Follow all workplace safety guidelines.

 

Other

  • Execute the North Freeze Dry Vision, Mission, and Values (VMV’s) at all times. 
  • Promote a positive, proactive environment where input from team members is valued and encouraged.
  • Provide back-up support for other roles, as necessary.
  • Available for overtime on a scheduled or call-in/call-back basis, as necessary. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager/supervisor.

Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will possess the following: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Self-motivated with ability to allow constructive feedback to grow in position. 
  • (6) months working experience in a manufacturing/production facility preferred. 
  • Ability to follow proper food safety, quality and workspace safety procedures and requirements. 
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.  
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment. 
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and stand for an extended period.  
  • Forklift experience (6+ months preferred), training provided, must be willing to obtain. 
  • Work well in a team environment.  
  • Mechanically inclined, drive yourself to continually grow and develop your role. 
  • Ability to adapt and accommodate change.

This job operates within a plant manufacturing environment. While performing the duties of this job inside the plant, the employee is frequently exposed to normal working conditions for a food manufacturing plant with a noise level that is moderate to loud noise. The role routinely uses machinery equipment, forklifts, computers, as well as laboratory instrumentation and equipment.  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee may be required to stand for extended periods of time as well as use hands or fingers to reach or handle, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. All vision abilities are required to encompass close-up work. On occasion, employees must be able to tolerate and endure extended seasonal hours and maintain alertness to meet deadlines. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to machinery and moving parts, airborne particles including grain dust and hazardous materials or fumes, which may require the use of PPE. The employee may be exposed to adverse weather conditions, extreme temperature changes in the plant from normal temperatures to negative temperatures, extended seasonal hours, high precarious places, and confined spaces. The noise level in some of the work environments may require the use of hearing protection.
