Job description

Job Description Step into a hands-on role where you'll turn engineered concepts into fully functioning automated machinery for a variety of industrial clients across California. This is a contract opportunity for a skilled Machine Builder who enjoys mechanical assembly, fabrication, and bringing complex systems to life on customer sites. You'll work on projects that demand precision, safety, and reliability, making a direct impact on production performance and uptime.

About the Role: You will be responsible for building, assembling, and installing custom machinery, ensuring all mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic control systems are integrated and functioning correctly. Working from detailed drawings and specifications, you'll take machines from components to fully commissioned equipment ready for production. Your work will be critical to delivering projects on time, meeting safety and quality standards, and supporting successful handover to end users.

Key Responsibilities: Assemble mechanical components, frames, guards, and subassemblies according to engineering drawings and build documentation Fabricate brackets, supports, and minor structural elements using standard shop tools (saws, drills, grinders, welders where applicable) Install and route hydraulic and pneumatic lines, valves, cylinders, and related components, ensuring leak-free and safe operation Integrate and mount sensors, actuators, motors, and control devices in coordination with PLC and automation control hardware Perform mechanical alignment, adjustment, and functional checks to verify correct motion, clearances, and performance of machine assemblies Conduct on-site machine installation, including anchoring, leveling, utility connections, and final mechanical setup at customer facilities Support machine commissioning activities, including dry runs, basic troubleshooting, and collaboration with controls engineers to validate operation Follow and enforce safety procedures, lockout/tagout practices, and OSHA-compliant work methods throughout assembly and installation tasks Key Requirements: Proven experience in machine building, mechanical assembly, or industrial equipment construction in a manufacturing or automation environment Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, assembly diagrams, and technical documentation Hands-on experience working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including installation, adjustment, and basic troubleshooting Familiarity with PLC-based automation controls, I/O devices, sensors, and actuators sufficient to support mechanical integration and testing Proficiency using standard hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment safely and efficiently Solid understanding of industrial safety practices and OSHA regulations applicable to machine assembly and installation work Ability to travel to customer sites within California for installation and commissioning work, including occasional extended stays Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or as part of a small project team Desirable Skills: Experience working with custom automation equipment, packaging machinery, or production line systems Exposure to basic PLC troubleshooting, HMI interfaces, and control panel layouts Familiarity with lockout/tagout procedures, machine guarding standards, and risk assessments Basic welding skills (MIG/TIG) for brackets, guards, and minor structural fabrication Experience in field service, equipment start-up, or commissioning support roles Qualifications: High school diploma or GED required Technical certificate or vocational training in mechanical technology, industrial maintenance, or related field preferred Apprenticeship or formal training in machine building, millwright work, or industrial mechanics advantageous OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 safety certification preferred Valid driver's license required for travel to customer sites If you're a detail-focused Machine Builder who enjoys seeing machines go from concept to fully operational systems, this contract role offers varied projects and hands-on work across California-apply now to be considered.
