The BILSTEIN facility in Bowling Green, KY is the company’s first United States manufacturing operation and serves the automotive industry as well as, the saw and tooling industry with tailor-made steel grades. BILSTEIN Cold Rolled Steel has doubled its revenue each year during it is first 3 years. As a young company we continue to plan further expansion in organic growth.

Position: Packaging Line Operator

Duties & Responsibilities

 Are you a highly motivated individual with a passion for innovation? Are you seeking a role that will challenge you in a company committed to championing your growth? We are presently looking for top talent to join our diverse organization. This position will set up, operate, maintain, and monitor the packaging line to prepare coils for storage or shipment objectives that impact the bottom line in an exciting, challenging and performance driven organization. It is essential that you are transparent and lead in a collaborative way

Specific duties include (but not limited to):

  • Operations
    • Reading production schedules and work orders to determine processing sequences, packing and shipping requirements.
      • Starting conveyors to load steel coils and/or signaling crane operators to move coils to the required position.
      • Positioning steel coils on the packaging lines, using crane chain hoists or grabs.
      • Recording data form the operator control screen for Quality Assurance purposes to ensure that the steel coils have been packed according to specifications.
      • Adjusting controls to maintain operations, utilizing output form operator control screens.
      • Observe machine operations to ensure quality and conformity of packaged coils, ensuring that the products conform to Domestic and Export packaging specifications.
      • Operating, monitoring, adjusting and maintaining the various packaging machines as necessary to ensure efficient operation, including Oiling, Welding, Stacking, Wrapping, (.i.e. protective film, paper, etc.), Weighing, Labelling.
      • Taking corrective action to recover the packaging line operation in the event of problems during production.
        • Repairing, replacing, and maintaining packaging line equipment as needed, using hand tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers but also electrical appliances such as shears, nibblers and load handling devices such as C-hooks, chains, ropes and slings. Cleaning, oiling, and making minor adjustments or repairs to pack line machinery and equipment, including preventative maintenance tasks.
        • Placing packed steel coils on conveyors, using crane, chain hoists or grabs, or signaling crane operators to transport them to subsequent stations.
  • Inspecting the prepackaged and packaged product, removing finished packaged coils from the packing line and separating rejected items noting defects affecting width, thickness, surface, shape, edge damage, placing the material on hold for further inspection.
    • Signaling crane operators to deposit packed steel coils in storage areas.
      • Printing and attaching packaging line identification tags on finished product for subsequent processing and identification.
      • Controlling inventory and sorting products for packaging, replenishing packaging supplies, such as oil, wrapping paper, wooden skids, stretch wrap and labels.
        • Reporting maintenance job orders as necessary.
        • Instructing new workers in packaging line operation.
Qualifications/Training:
  • Education: Completion of High School or Secondary Education, AS or Technical degree with equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of production and processing of cold rolled steel would be an advantage.
