Job description

Position Overview

Primarily responsible for providing engineering and design support to RealTruck corporate packaging engineering activities for pick-up truck Bed Covers (a.k.a. Tonneau Covers) and related truck accessory components manufactured by RealTruck. Projects will include a variety of assignments with increasing and varying responsibility including CAD drawing and design, 3D printing, prototype fabrication and assembly, testing and analysis, project management and stakeholder collaboration, and presentations at the midpoint and conclusion of the internship.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  • Engineering & Design – Apply engineering principles learned to date for the purpose of creating innovative designs, concepts and complete packaging engineering. Provide drawing and design support as required during the internship.  Must be capable of designing in SolidWorks (training will be provided as necessary).
  • Coordinate design-related packaging workload with designated Design Engineer.
  • Drawing Release/ ECN – Utilize the RealTruck drawing release and engineering change processes when required.
  • Testing – Participate in a variety of testing, using in-house equipment as well as external test partners.
  • Continuous Improvement -- Identify, analyze, and implement continuous packaging & product design improvement to reduce warranty and improve manufacturing process efficiency, safety, quality, and cost (value analysis/value engineering [VA/VE]) as assigned.
  • Presentation – Required to make a brief presentation to the Engineering team at the middle and end of internship that highlights duties assigned and accomplishments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Must be actively pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Packaging from Michigan State University.
  • Must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Must have the ability to use SolidWorks. Training will be provided as needed.
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of package development process and engineering principles, strong mechanical aptitude. Must have a functional knowledge of packaging materials, converting technology and packaging operations.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or have a U.S. Permanent Resident (Green) Card.

  • Demonstrate effective collaboration within a cross-functional team environment with minimal supervision (internal / external customers, including Operations, Supply Chain, and Brand teams).
  • Participate in brainstorming and information gathering, as needed.

Travel

  • Generally, some travel is anticipated. There may be opportunity to work at a RealTruck operation within the continental United States. In the event travel is required, all travel expenses will be paid for by the company per travel policy in effect.
  • Travel will vary based on internship projects and assignments. Travel could be up to approximately 4 – 8 weeks over the course of the internship, to support site audits and project support, as needed.
