What does a packaging distributor do?

A Packaging Distributor acts as a middleman between packaging manufacturers and businesses that need packaging materials, such as boxes, bags, and shipping supplies. They source a variety of packaging products, manage inventory, and provide these materials to companies in industries like retail, food, and e-commerce. Packaging Distributors often offer additional services such as custom packaging solutions, logistics support, and consultation on packaging efficiency. Their goal is to ensure clients have the right packaging materials to safely store, protect, and ship their products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a packaging distributor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Packaging Distributor, you need a solid understanding of supply chain logistics, inventory management, and knowledge of packaging materials, often supported by experience in distribution or a related field. Familiarity with inventory management software, order processing systems, and basic ERP tools is typically required. Strong negotiation, relationship-building, and organizational skills help you stand out in managing client accounts and coordinating with vendors. These skills ensure efficient order fulfillment, customer satisfaction, and the ability to adapt to changing market demands.

What are some common challenges packaging distributors face when managing client expectations?

Packaging Distributors often navigate challenges such as fluctuating material costs, supply chain delays, and clients' requests for sustainable options. Managing these expectations requires clear communication, proactive updates, and flexible solutions to meet deadlines and quality standards. The ideal candidate is a strong people leader who understands manufacturing and warehouse operations, is comfortable making day-to-day operational decisions, and knows how to use performance metrics, standard processes, and continuous improvement to drive results.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the daily operations of the Packaging department, Distribution Warehouse, and Materials Storage Facility, ensuring production and logistics goals are achieved safely, efficiently, and to established quality standards.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop Packaging and Warehouse employees while coordinating daily staffing and work assignments based on production priorities and operational needs.
  • Monitor production and warehouse performance, identify operational gaps, and implement improvements that increase productivity, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Coordinate inbound and outbound material movement across multiple company facilities while balancing warehouse capacity, production requirements, and customer needs.
  • Partner with Transportation and other operational teams to improve routing, carrier utilization, freight execution, and the overall movement of materials.
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce standard operating procedures for packaging, receiving, storage, inventory movement, and outbound warehouse activities.
  • Promote a strong culture of workplace safety and ensure compliance with applicable OSHA requirements, company safety practices, and established quality standards.
  • Support and maintain compliance with the company's ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
  • Lead all aspects of employee supervision, including hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, performance management, evaluations, corrective action, and employee development in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for Packaging and Warehouse operational issues, troubleshooting production, inventory, supply, and logistics challenges as they arise.
  • Lead incident investigations and work with appropriate departments to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in cross-functional and cross-facility projects focused on improving efficiency, reducing waste, strengthening processes, and supporting broader supply chain objectives.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing, plant operations, warehouse operations, distribution, logistics, or a related environment.
  • 2–3+ years of supervisory or plant leadership experience, with demonstrated responsibility for leading employees and driving operational performance.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing, packaging, warehouse, inventory, and material-handling processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and hold teams accountable for safety, quality, productivity, and performance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound operational decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working across departments or facilities to coordinate production, inventory, transportation, or logistics activities.
  • Ability to establish and monitor operational performance metrics and use data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with employees, supervisors, managers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Working knowledge of production tracking, warehouse management, inventory, or ERP systems.
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or other relevant post-secondary education preferred.
  • Experience with ISO 9001 or a similar Quality Management System is preferred.
  • Experience coordinating logistics or operations across multiple facilities is preferred.
What Success Looks Like

You'll play an important role in developing the team, strengthening processes, and identifying opportunities to improve how our packaging and distribution operations perform.
