What is a pre fab?

Pre Fab jobs refer to positions involved in the prefabrication (pre fab) industry, where building components are manufactured in a factory or other controlled environment and then transported to the construction site for assembly. Workers in this field may be responsible for assembling, welding, or preparing sections of buildings, such as walls, floors, or roofs, before they are delivered to the site. Pre Fab jobs can include roles like assemblers, welders, quality inspectors, and engineers. This method helps speed up construction, reduce costs, and improve quality control. The demand for Pre Fab professionals is growing as the construction industry increasingly adopts modular and off-site construction techniques.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a pre fab technician, and how do they collaborate with other departments?

Pre Fab technicians are responsible for assembling and preparing components or structures in a controlled environment before they’re transported to job sites for final installation. Daily tasks often include reading blueprints, measuring and cutting materials, and performing quality checks to ensure components meet specifications. Collaboration is key—Pre Fab technicians frequently work with engineers, project managers, and logistics teams to coordinate production schedules and resolve any design or material issues. This teamwork ensures that prefabricated parts are produced efficiently and delivered on time for construction projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pre fab technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pre Fab Technician, you need a solid understanding of construction methods, blueprint reading, and the ability to operate fabrication tools, often supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with power tools, welding equipment, and computerized measuring systems is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precise fabrication, safety, and efficient collaboration on construction or manufacturing projects.

Job Summary
We are seeking a highly organized and strategic Procurement Manager to oversee our complete end-to-end material, shop, and fleet operations at our San Diego headquarters. In this pivotal role, you will lead and integrate these core functions: Purchasing, Warehouse Operations, the Fabrication/Pre-fab Shop, and Delivery Drivers. Your primary goal is to ensure project materials are delivered accurately, safely, on time, and within budget.
Core Responsibilities
1.Purchasing & Procurement
  • Vendor Negotiations: Manage supplier and manufacturer relationships to secure competitive pricing on all components needed: such as lifts, tools, pipes, valves, fittings, and fire alarm components.
  • Material Planning: Utilize Material Requirements Planning (MRP) strategies to align order placements with upcoming commercial and residential project timelines, as well as warehouse inventory.
  • Cost Control: Review purchase orders, audit vendor invoices, and manage the procurement budget to minimize project variances.

2.Warehouse Operations
  • Inventory Control: Oversee the reception, staging, and tracking of raw materials and finished goods to eliminate stockouts and reduce carrying costs. Maintaining 100% stock accuracy through rigorous cycle counting and organized bin locations.
  • Optimization: Implement the "5S" methodology (Sort, set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) to maximize space utilization, picking efficiency, and accuracy and maintain a clean, safe, and efficient warehouse.
  • Safety Compliance: Enforce strict safety protocols, Cal/OSHA standards, and proper material-handling equipment operations.

3.Shop Management (Fabrication/Pre-fab)
  • Production Scheduling: Coordinate with project managers and shop leads to prioritize the cutting, threading, and welding of fire sprinkler piping.
  • Operational Readiness: Pre-assembling and staging material "kits" by project or job number to minimize crew downtime.
  • Quality Assurance: Oversee the receiving dock to verify all incoming shipments against Packing Slips and Purchase Orders. Ensure all fabricated components meet engineering blueprints, NFPA codes, and rigid internal quality metrics.
  • Resource Allocation: Manage shop labor capacity, tools, and consumables to optimize daily fabrication throughput.

4.Delivery Drivers & Logistics
  • Communication Efficiency: Providing proactive updates to Field Supervisors when materials arrive and coordinating logistics to meet production schedules.
  • Route Dispatching: Oversee the scheduling and dispatching of delivery drivers to various job sites across San Diego and broader Southern California.
  • Load Management: Ensure vehicles are loaded efficiently and safely, securing heavy pipes and fragile electronic alarm components.
  • Performance Tracking: Monitor delivery turnaround times, fuel efficiency, and field-delivery feedback.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, Logistics, Business Administration, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in supply chain, logistics, warehouse management or industrial distribution, ideally within the construction, trades, or fire protection industries.
  • Operational Execution: Proficiency in the "Operational Hand-Off," including receiving, inspecting, logging, and kitting materials by job number.
  • Certification: CPIM (Certified in Planning and Inventory Management) or CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) is preferred.
  • Leadership: Proven track record of managing cross-functional teams, including purchasing and warehouse staff while maintaining professional, peer-level relationships with other department heads.
  • Technical Savvy: High proficiency with inventory management software, ERP/MRP systems, and fleet telematics platforms.
  • Logistics Acumen: Strong understanding of San Diego transport logistics, DOT regulations, and CA vehicle compliance laws.

Other
  • No Third-Party Agency Solicitation.
  • Location Requirement: This position is open only to local candidates currently residing in the Southern California area. Remote candidates or applicants requiring relocation assistance will not be considered.
