Job description

Director of Transportation Design Engineering

A growing engineering and construction services firm is seeking a Director of Transportation Design Engineering to provide strategic leadership and oversee the design and implementation of transportation infrastructure projects. This is a key leadership role for an experienced transportation engineering professional with a strong track record in project delivery, team leadership, and client management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic direction and vision for the transportation design engineering department.
  • Develop and implement long-term goals, business plans, and initiatives to drive department growth.
  • Oversee the planning, design, and execution of transportation and municipal projects, ensuring quality, budget, and schedule requirements are met.
  • Serve as a project director on key initiatives, leading multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers, designers, and project managers.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment that supports professional development and knowledge sharing.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while understanding their needs and expectations.
  • Collaborate with clients to develop project scopes, deliverables, and ensure satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance on complex engineering challenges.
  • Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies in transportation and municipal engineering.
  • Implement and maintain quality control processes to ensure accurate and reliable engineering designs and deliverables.
  • Review and approve engineering plans, specifications, and reports.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in transportation design engineering.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and OpenRoads/MicroStation.
  • Proven experience successfully managing and delivering large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients and internal teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant engineering codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Experience with ODOT and/or INDOT projects preferred.

Compensation: Competitive salary plus performance-based bonus.

Bonus: Directors are eligible to participate in performance-based bonus pools tied to company and department performance. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.

Sign-On Bonus: A sign-on bonus may be considered on a case-by-case basis, particularly for candidates who may be leaving existing compensation on the table or whose salary expectations are slightly above the target range.
