Job Summary:
The P&C Test Engineer provides Protection & Controls (P&C) field testing and commissioning services across the Southern U.S., delivering safe, high-quality work for utility, co-op, and municipal customers. This role assists with the development of safety and compliance programs, contributes to process standardization, and helps strengthen customer relationships.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Field Testing and Commissioning
  • Perform field testing including relay protection testing, breaker testing, power transformer testing, instrument transformer testing, and control circuit verifications.
  • Execute end-to-end testing and ensure accuracy of relay logic and trip paths.

Project Planning & Closeout
  • Review scopes of work (SOW) and drawings.
  • Develop detailed procedures and checkout summaries.
  • Determine project schedules and commissioning plans.
  • Compile test results into professional reports and submit lessons learned.
  • Ensure equipment is returned or stored properly.

Collaboration & Support
  • Assist other departments with subject matter expertise (SME) support.
  • Network with peers to identify opportunities for continual improvement.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of safety and operational procedures.

Training and Recruiting
  • Complete and participate in annual training events.
  • Participate in company events.
  • Maintain technical personal progression.
  • Assist with networking and outreach.
  • Participate in recruiting events.

Attributes/Abilities:
  • Must have a satisfactory background/MVR check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and/or random drug test.
  • A positive attitude that inspires teamwork and productivity.
  • Strong procedure writing: develop detailed test plans, procedures and energization checklists, define isolation boundaries, and align with NETA/IEEE and utility standards.
  • Technical proficiency in reading wire schematics and basic electrical wiring techniques.
  • Proficient with Doble, Omicron and RTS software to execute equipment testing, end-to-end verification, validate relay logic, and prove trip paths from IED to breaker.
  • Safety-first operator: rigorously apply LOTO, verify live-dead-live states, utilize HPI kits, and maintain/refresh daily JHAs as site conditions evolve.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Experience and Education:
  • 1- 3 years' experience in the electrical testing industry with a focus on working with protection and control equipment, RTU's, and telecom with HV utility, co-op, power generation, federal, or municipal clients.
  • High School diploma/G.E.D., Associates degree or Trade/Technical school degree.
  • Experience with transmission and distribution relays include SEL, GE, ABB, and Westinghouse.
  • Experience with substation RTU's, communication processors, and telecom equipment for both brownfield and greenfield projects.
  • Experienced with scoping, scheduling, and budgeting process for protection and control, RTU, and telecom projects for both internal and external entities.
  • Experience with project management of protection and control teams working in HV substations for utility clients.
  • Familiar with NERC CIP requirements.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work safely around electrical and mechanical hazards.
  • Potential exposure to various conditions, including dirt, heat, fumes, smoke, water, noise, vibration, grease, oil, and dust.
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional overtime as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • May require occasional travel.
