What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Oxidation Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Oxidation Specialist, you need a solid background in chemistry, laboratory techniques, and process optimization, typically supported by a degree in chemistry or chemical engineering. Familiarity with analytical instruments such as gas chromatographs, spectrophotometers, and chemical process simulation software is commonly required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in this role. These skills are essential for ensuring safe, efficient, and accurate oxidation processes in industrial or research settings.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in oxidation process roles within industrial or laboratory settings?

Professionals responsible for oxidation processes often encounter challenges such as maintaining optimal reaction conditions, ensuring safety when handling reactive chemicals, and troubleshooting process inefficiencies. Working closely with quality control, engineering, and environmental health teams is essential to meet regulatory standards and product specifications. Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills are key, as each project may have unique requirements for temperature control, catalyst selection, and byproduct management.

What are oxidation jobs?

Oxidation jobs typically involve processes where materials, often metals or chemicals, are exposed to oxygen or other oxidizing agents to change their properties. This can include roles in industries like metallurgy, chemical manufacturing, or environmental engineering, where controlling oxidation is important for producing products or reducing pollutants. Workers in these jobs may operate and monitor equipment, run chemical reactions, or perform quality control on oxidized products. Safety and knowledge of chemical processes are important aspects of oxidation-related positions.

What is the difference between Oxidation vs Chemist?

AspectOxidationChemist
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; training in chemical processesBachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field; often advanced degrees for specialized roles
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, chemical processing facilitiesResearch labs, industrial settings, pharmaceutical companies
Industry UsageSpecific chemical reactions involving oxidation processesBroad chemistry applications including research, development, and quality control

Oxidation refers to a chemical process involving the loss of electrons, often performed by technicians or specialists in chemical manufacturing. Chemists, on the other hand, are professionals who study, develop, and analyze chemical substances, including oxidation reactions. While oxidation is a specific process, chemists work across a wide range of chemical activities, making their roles broader in scope.

About the Role
The Senior Project Metallurgist partners closely with the Manager, Processing & Metallurgy to deliver metallurgical characterization and process engineering for the Nevada Projects portfolio. This role serves as the technical execution lead for study-phase metallurgy-overseeing representative sample selection, managing metallurgical testwork programs, and performing rigorous technical reviews of EPCM engineering deliverables to support robust and defensible process flowsheet development.
Key Responsibilities
Project Metallurgy & Study Delivery
  • Lead metallurgical scope for scoping-level concept studies and play a key role in Pre-Feasibility (PFS) and Feasibility Studies (FS) in alignment with stage-gate requirements.
  • Author and compile metallurgy and processing sections of technical study reports.
  • Ensure metallurgical deliverables meet project governance, quality, and decision-readiness standards.

Metallurgical Testwork & Sampling
  • Design, manage, and execute comprehensive metallurgical testwork programs in collaboration with external laboratories.
  • Select representative samples through detailed review of historical testwork and geological block models.
  • Manage sample collection, logistics, and laboratory coordination.
  • Review, validate, and interpret laboratory data to ensure alignment with project objectives and flowsheet development.

Process Design & Engineering Review
  • Perform detailed technical reviews of EPCM engineering deliverables, including process design criteria, PFDs, P&IDs, general arrangements, and equipment lists.
  • Work closely with EPCM contractors and specialty consultants to review, challenge, and approve metallurgical design packages.
  • Lead technical and economic trade-off studies to support process selection and optimization.

Cost, Performance & Operational Readiness Support
  • Support development of CAPEX and OPEX estimates, reagent consumption forecasts, recovery models, and operating philosophies.
  • Build and refine process operating models using advanced data analysis and specialized software.
  • Support Operational Readiness planning for PFS and FS phases to ensure smooth transition into execution.

Safety, Compliance & Collaboration
  • Ensure all metallurgical study and testwork activities comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote safe execution of metallurgical programs and site-based activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with Engineering, Mining, Geology, Project Controls, and Corporate Metallurgy teams.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related process discipline (required).
  • Advanced degree or specialized postgraduate training preferred.
  • Proficiency with metallurgical and engineering software platforms.
  • 5-7 years of experience in project metallurgy, mineral processing, or ore processing operations.
  • Experience supporting metallurgical scope across multiple project phases preferred.
  • Background in gold processing operations desirable, including HPGR, heap leaching, or filtered tailings systems.
  • Proven ability to work within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgical testwork programs and scale-up principles.
  • Familiarity with gold processing flowsheets, including flotation, pressure oxidation, and atmospheric oxidation.
  • Strong technical writing, reporting, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex datasets, draw sound conclusions, and support technical decision-making.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and accountability in high-impact technical decisions.
  • Strong awareness of safety, health, and environmental requirements.
  • Ability to work independently within established governance and standards.
  • Collaborative mindset with a willingness to mentor and support team development.
  • Awareness of cultural and community considerations in mine development.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
