Amentum is seeking aMarine Mechanicto support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Marine Mechanic will be responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, and overhauling marine diesel engines, waterjets, propulsion systems, and associated mechanical equipment aboard assigned vessels. This position supports vessel engineering operations by performing preventive and corrective maintenance, assisting with dry dock operations, conducting inspections, and ensuring all work is completed safely and in accordance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, overhaul, and maintain marine diesel engines, waterjets, propulsion systems, and associated mechanical equipment aboard assigned vessels.
  • Provide technical support to Chief Engineers and Vessel Engineers to ensure the safe and reliable operation of vessel machinery.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain auxiliary mechanical systems, including air compressors, pumps, cooling systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, and related equipment.
  • Determine required replacement parts, materials, tools, and supplies necessary to complete maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications, company procedures, and maintenance schedules.
  • Support vessel dry dock operations by performing inspections, repairs, equipment installation, and maintenance activities both onboard and ashore.
  • Assist in the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the syncrolift and associated equipment.
  • Conduct routine vessel inspections to identify deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain vessel charts, technical manuals, maintenance records, and required maritime publications.
  • Perform government directed maintenance tasks and special projects under general supervision.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company policies, standard operating procedures, environmental regulations, hazardous material requirements, and pollution prevention guidelines.
  • Conduct on the job training and provide technical guidance to junior mechanics and maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, inspection reports, and equipment documentation.
  • Promote a safe work environment by adhering to all applicable safety regulations and reporting hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing diesel engine repairs, preferably involving marine diesel engines, propulsion systems, and associated vessel machinery.
  • Working knowledge of troubleshooting, repairing, and overhauling diesel engines and marine mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand operating manuals, service manuals, technical drawings, and repair documentation written in English.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of marine mechanical systems, preventive maintenance practices, and repair procedures.
  • Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
  • Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
  • Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and comprehend English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in an austereOCONUS (Outside the Continental United States)environment with a multi-national workforce
  • A valid driver's license to legally operate a motor vehicle. Valid country driver's license. and passport.
  • Degree or certification from an accredited maritime vocational school, technical institute, or shipyard apprenticeship program.
  • Detroit Diesel Electronic Controls 60 series qualification certificate for engine teardown and rebuild.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential or Merchant Mariner Document with a Qualified Member of the Engine Department - Oiler endorsement or higher.
  • Previous experience supporting operations in austere or overseas environments with a multinational workforce.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, troubleshooting, and customer service skills.
  • Country visa, when required in accordance with the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
  • Knowledge of marine diesel engines, propulsion systems, waterjets, auxiliary equipment, and vessel mechanical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair complex mechanical failures using technical manuals, diagnostic equipment, and testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of marine safety regulations, HAZMAT handling procedures, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and specialized marine maintenance equipment.
  • Strong analytical troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize multiple maintenance activities while meeting operational deadlines.

Working Environment

This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.

Physical Requirements

Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
