What is an Overnight Waymo Autonomous Vehicle operator?

An Overnight Waymo Autonomous Vehicle operator is responsible for monitoring and supporting Waymo's self-driving vehicles during nighttime hours. These professionals may oversee vehicle performance remotely, respond to alerts or incidents, and ensure that vehicles complete their assigned routes safely and efficiently. The role typically involves working late-night or early-morning shifts, often in a control center environment, and requires attention to detail and the ability to follow safety protocols. Operators play a crucial part in the testing and deployment of autonomous vehicle technology by providing real-time feedback and support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Operator, and why are they important?

To excel as an Overnight Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Operator, candidates generally need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, attention to detail, and the ability to follow safety protocols. Familiarity with onboard diagnostic tools, computer systems, and Waymo’s proprietary vehicle software is typically required, along with completion of specialized training. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to remain focused during overnight hours are essential soft skills. These qualifications ensure the safe monitoring and reporting of autonomous vehicle performance, contributing to the reliability and advancement of Waymo’s technology.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by an Overnight Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Operator?

As an Overnight Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Operator, your primary duties include monitoring autonomous vehicles during nighttime testing, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and accurately documenting any irregularities or system messages. A common challenge is staying alert and attentive throughout long night shifts, especially when traffic is minimal. Operators also collaborate closely with engineering teams by providing feedback and insights from their shifts, which directly contributes to the improvement of self-driving technology. Strong communication skills and the ability to adapt to evolving procedures are key for success in this role.

What is the difference between Overnight Waymo Autonomous Vehicle vs Autonomous Vehicle Technician?

AspectOvernight Waymo Autonomous VehicleAutonomous Vehicle Technician
CredentialsDriver's license, training in autonomous systemsTechnical certifications, ASE or manufacturer-specific training
Work EnvironmentIn-vehicle, on public roads, remote monitoringGarage, maintenance facilities, testing sites
Employer & IndustryWaymo, autonomous vehicle industryAuto manufacturers, tech companies, service providers

Overnight Waymo Autonomous Vehicles operate autonomously on public roads, often during night hours, focusing on safe navigation and system monitoring. Autonomous Vehicle Technicians perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on autonomous systems and vehicles. While both roles require knowledge of vehicle systems, the former emphasizes remote operation and safety protocols, whereas the latter involves hands-on technical skills.

Job description

The Fleet Response team's mission is to accelerate the safe deployment of Waymo's autonomous technology. Fleet Response operates at the cutting edge of our autonomous driving operations. In certain highly ambiguous or complex situations, the Waymo Driver can request the assistance of human Fleet Response Operators (FROs) to provide extra context and information. Those operators use a web application to receive real-time video, audio, and other telemetry from the vehicle and provide guidance back to the Driver.

We are seeking a hands-on Tech Lead to own Fleet Response's mission-critical full-stack systems that make this real-time collaboration possible. You will lead a team of talented engineers to deliver reliable, globally-available, low-latency visualization and interaction - with a direct impact on Waymo's autonomous fleet every single day.

You will:

  • Own the end-to-end reliability and performance of mission-critical web applications used for real-time autonomous vehicle support.
  • Hold core responsibility for frontend and backend infrastructure, including robust APIs and seamless integration with upstream and downstream services.
  • Ensure the Fleet Response platform scales effectively to meet Waymo's reliability, performance, and functionality requirements.
  • Advise and guide cross-functional engineers across Fleet Response and broader Waymo teams to ensure optimal utilization of web application systems
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers on web app infrastructure design, technical execution, and engineering best practices.
  • Partner closely with Waymo SRE to drive global scalability and maintain the high availability of mission-critical, real-time platforms.

You have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar technical field of study
  • 5+ years of industry experience with web applications (frontend and backend).
  • Familiarity with web client architectures (Angular, TypeScript, RxJS, etc).
  • Experience leading technical designs and mentoring engineers on complex, multi-quarter projects.
  • Enjoyment from working closely with your users.
  • A strong intrinsic motivation for reliability.

We prefer:

  • Experience bringing technical and non-technical groups together.
  • Experience with C++.
  • Experience building high-reliability distributed systems or RPC services.
  • An investigative mindset.
  • A track record of successful partnerships with SRE.
