What are Night Waymo Autonomous Vehicle jobs?

Night Waymo Autonomous Vehicle jobs typically involve monitoring, operating, or supporting Waymo's self-driving vehicles during nighttime hours. These positions may include roles such as autonomous vehicle operators, safety drivers, or field support specialists who ensure vehicles operate safely and efficiently when roads are less busy. Employees in these roles are responsible for overseeing vehicle performance, responding to any unexpected situations, and providing valuable feedback to improve self-driving technology. Night shifts are essential to expand autonomous vehicle operations and collect important data in varied driving conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Night Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Night Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Operator, you need a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, attention to detail, and familiarity with basic vehicle operations. Experience with computer systems, in-vehicle monitoring software, and sometimes completion of company-specific training or certifications is typically required. Strong observational skills, reliability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for ensuring safe and accurate reporting during night shifts. These qualifications are essential for safely monitoring autonomous test vehicles, accurately documenting events, and responding swiftly to any unexpected situations.

What are some unique challenges faced by Night Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Operators, and how can they prepare for them?

Night Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Operators often encounter challenges such as reduced visibility, increased pedestrian and cyclist activity, and unpredictable road conditions after dark. Operators need to remain especially vigilant, monitor vehicle sensor data closely, and be prepared to intervene if unexpected situations arise. Effective communication with remote support teams and strict adherence to safety protocols are essential. Familiarity with local routes and ongoing training can also help operators respond confidently to nighttime driving scenarios.

What is the difference between Night Waymo Autonomous Vehicle vs Night Autonomous Delivery Driver?

AspectNight Waymo Autonomous VehicleNight Autonomous Delivery Driver
Required CredentialsNone or minimal; may include licensing for vehicle operationDriver's license; delivery certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentSelf-driving vehicle in urban/suburban areas, monitored remotelyOn-road delivery routes, often in various weather conditions
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, autonomous vehicle industry, transportationDelivery services, logistics, e-commerce

While Night Waymo Autonomous Vehicles operate autonomously with minimal human intervention, Night Autonomous Delivery Drivers rely on their driving skills to deliver goods during night hours. Both roles involve night shifts and driving, but the Waymo vehicle role emphasizes autonomous technology, whereas the delivery driver role requires active driving and customer interaction.

Job description

The Fleet Response team's mission is to accelerate the safe deployment of Waymo's autonomous technology. Fleet Response operates at the cutting edge of our autonomous driving operations. In certain highly ambiguous or complex situations, the Waymo Driver can request the assistance of human Fleet Response Operators (FROs) to provide extra context and information. Those operators use a web application to receive real-time video, audio, and other telemetry from the vehicle and provide guidance back to the Driver.

We are seeking a hands-on Tech Lead to own Fleet Response's mission-critical full-stack systems that make this real-time collaboration possible. You will lead a team of talented engineers to deliver reliable, globally-available, low-latency visualization and interaction - with a direct impact on Waymo's autonomous fleet every single day.

You will:

  • Own the end-to-end reliability and performance of mission-critical web applications used for real-time autonomous vehicle support.
  • Hold core responsibility for frontend and backend infrastructure, including robust APIs and seamless integration with upstream and downstream services.
  • Ensure the Fleet Response platform scales effectively to meet Waymo's reliability, performance, and functionality requirements.
  • Advise and guide cross-functional engineers across Fleet Response and broader Waymo teams to ensure optimal utilization of web application systems
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers on web app infrastructure design, technical execution, and engineering best practices.
  • Partner closely with Waymo SRE to drive global scalability and maintain the high availability of mission-critical, real-time platforms.

You have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar technical field of study
  • 5+ years of industry experience with web applications (frontend and backend).
  • Familiarity with web client architectures (Angular, TypeScript, RxJS, etc).
  • Experience leading technical designs and mentoring engineers on complex, multi-quarter projects.
  • Enjoyment from working closely with your users.
  • A strong intrinsic motivation for reliability.

We prefer:

  • Experience bringing technical and non-technical groups together.
  • Experience with C++.
  • Experience building high-reliability distributed systems or RPC services.
  • An investigative mindset.
  • A track record of successful partnerships with SRE.
