Art Teacher – Grades 5–12

Job Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Grade Levels: 5–12


Position Overview

An educational institution is seeking a creative, passionate, and student-focused Art Teacher to provide visual arts instruction for students in grades 5–12.

The Art Teacher will develop and deliver engaging, standards-aligned lessons that encourage creativity, artistic expression, critical thinking, and appreciation of the visual arts. The ideal candidate will create an inclusive classroom environment where students of different skill levels can develop their artistic abilities while building confidence and preparing for continued academic and creative growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging visual arts instruction for students in grades 5–12.
  • Create lesson plans aligned with applicable state visual arts standards and grade-level learning objectives.
  • Teach a variety of art concepts, techniques, and mediums based on student grade level and ability.
  • Provide instruction in areas such as drawing, painting, design, color theory, sculpture, mixed media, art history, and digital/technology-based art as appropriate.
  • Differentiate instruction to accommodate varying artistic abilities, learning styles, and student needs.
  • Encourage creativity, artistic expression, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  • Provide students with opportunities to develop portfolios and showcase their artwork.
  • Establish and maintain a positive, inclusive, and well-managed classroom environment.
  • Assess student artwork and progress using appropriate instructional and performance-based assessment methods.
  • Maintain accurate student grades, attendance, progress records, and other required documentation.
  • Provide constructive feedback to help students improve their artistic techniques and creative processes.
  • Incorporate technology and digital tools into art instruction when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, support staff, and families to support student achievement.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, school events, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Support art exhibitions, student showcases, competitions, or other educational/community art activities.
  • Maintain and organize classroom materials, equipment, and art supplies.
  • Promote proper safety procedures when using art materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Support students in developing an appreciation for diverse cultures, artists, artistic traditions, and perspectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by school administration.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, or a related field.
  • Valid state teaching certification with the appropriate Visual Arts/Art endorsement, or eligibility/willingness to obtain the required certification.
  • Experience teaching art at the middle school and/or high school level preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of visual arts concepts, techniques, materials, and instructional practices.
  • Ability to teach students across multiple grade levels, from 5th through 12th grade.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for students with varying abilities and learning needs.
  • Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create a positive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.
  • Comfortable incorporating technology and digital resources into art instruction.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage classroom materials and supplies.
  • Passion for helping students develop creativity, confidence, artistic skills, and appreciation for the arts.


Preferred Skills

  • Experience teaching grades 5–12.
  • Experience developing student art portfolios.
  • Experience with digital art or design software.
  • Experience organizing student art shows, exhibitions, or competitions.
  • Knowledge of applicable state Visual Arts Standards.
  • Experience working in a public, charter, private, or technology-focused educational environment.
