RELIEF COUNSELOR

WHAT WE DO
We provide those experiencing symptoms of serious mental illness and other co-occurring disorders with alternatives to institutional placement. We are a private, non-profit mental health agency operating in Marin, San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma Counties. The primary treatment philosophy of Progress Foundation is described by the Principles of Social Rehabilitation, which emphasize the role of a home-like treatment environment, the importance of building honorable therapeutic relationships and the significance of encouraging the active participation of the client in their treatment planning.

Staff work with clients to create treatment plans tailored to the unique strengths of the individual. Services are targeted to respond to the needs of individuals who are considered severely disabled due to mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse. Progress Foundation provides the full spectrum of treatment from a community-based Psychiatric Crisis Clinic and short-term Crisis Residential to moderate and long-term Transitional Residential treatment. We also provide Case Management Services in independent housing and treatment-focused cooperative living apartments.

OUR SERVICES - Each program level is designed to meet the needs of clients with the level of support necessary for that individual. Admission to all Progress Foundation programs is on a voluntary basis only. Services are specifically targeted to respond to the needs of individuals who are considered severely disabled due to mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse. Program services and staffing reflect a strong commitment to diversity and an awareness of the critical importance of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and social issues in the provision of effective community behavioral health services.

RELIEF COUNSELOR

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Program Director or the Assistant Director, Relief Counselors provide support and assistance to clients at one of the Progress Foundation programs, most of which are housed in multi-level facilities. Generally, Relief Counselors advocate for and respond to clients’ treatment and rehabilitation needs. Specific functions are outlined in the job description.

Duties include: Assist in the orientation of new clients, respond to psychiatric and/or medical emergency situations, support clients’ efforts to implement treatment plans, write progress notes on clients, relay clinical and house-status information to other staff, monitor and record client medications, assist in the case management activities, participate and involve clients in program activities, be responsible for the physical plant including investigating problems in the facility and performing minor cleaning and repair work, and other household tasks. Candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including some weekend and overnight shifts.

Minimum qualifications:

Experience in residential treatment and /or knowledge of social rehabilitation is preferred, but not required. Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, clients and other providers both orally and in writing. Must demonstrate an acceptable level of maturity, good judgment and emotional stability, Must be able to negotiate several flights of stairs during each work shift and life and carry 20lb packages several times during each work shift. Basic word processing skills; maintain computer requirements of the County of Marin Community Behavioral Health Services.
