Civil Site Engineer - Transmission Civil Design
Southern Company Services Technical & Project Solutions - Civil Engineering
Opening located in Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta)
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for Civil Sitework design to support Southern Company's Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Substation Design Group as well as providing support to the Transmission Line Design Group. The Engineer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for Civil Sitework design projects which includes, but is not limited to, grading and drainage, erosion control, oil containment, etc. with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. This position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a hybrid work environment with reliable access to internet service. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commuting distance to Forest Park, GA.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a "Safety First" mentality and leading by example.
  • Prepare high quality Civil Sitework design packages needed for the construction of new, or for the modification of existing, substation and transmission facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
  • The Engineer in the Civil Engineering Group will be responsible for civil site work design, including preparation of grading, drainage, erosion control, and oil containment plans. The individual shall have a solid understanding of reviewing and interpreting survey data required to develop a Civil Sitework land development design package for construction. The Engineer will be responsible for supporting the planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with the Civil portion of transmission substation and line projects. This position will also be responsible for tracking project expenditures.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Civil Design.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve standards and material issues.
  • Provide support to GPC Constructions Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Project Management, Substation Maintenance, Transmission Line Maintenance, and SCS Civil Field Services.
  • Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Some overnight travel may be required.
  • Attend and actively participate in design review meetings.
  • Provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters.
  • Support Southern Company's design criteria and standardization effort.
  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
  • Provide assistance as a part of a storm restoration team after major storm events in the Southern Company service territory.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required.
    • BS in Civil Engineering strongly preferred.
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification required.
  • A Professional Engineers (PE) license in the state of Georgia is strongly preferred, or the ability to obtain such license within 12-months of hire.

Experience
  • Considerable experience in grading design, erosion control design, hydrology and storm water design are required.
  • Prior foundation and structure design experience is a plus.
  • Prior experience in construction estimating and construction administration is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing civil grading design and construction as it relates to NPDES and general construction principals.
  • General knowledge of the activities associated with surveying, land acquisition, and obtaining easements.
  • Detailed knowledge of cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.
  • Detailed knowledge of civil construction methods, equipment, techniques, and associated costs.
  • Detailed knowledge of right-of-way clearing, environmental regulations, and crew support activities and associated costs.
  • Demonstrated ability to design a Civil Sitework land development project including site grading, stormwater design, erosion control, and permitting.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply design criteria and government regulations to design construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Hydraflow hydrographs, Interconnected Channel and Pond Routing (ICPR), or similar software for stormwater modeling is required.
