What is an overnight security manager?

Overnight Security Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the safety and security of a property or organization during nighttime hours. They manage security staff, monitor surveillance systems, conduct regular patrols, and respond to incidents or emergencies that occur overnight. Their duties also include writing reports, enforcing policies, and ensuring all security protocols are followed to protect people and assets. Overnight Security Managers often collaborate with local law enforcement and other emergency services when necessary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight security manager?

To thrive as an Overnight Security Manager, you need a solid background in security operations, risk assessment, and team supervision, often supported by experience in law enforcement or security management. Familiarity with surveillance systems, access control technologies, and incident reporting software is typically required, and certifications like CPP (Certified Protection Professional) can be advantageous. Strong leadership, decision-making, and effective communication skills are essential for managing teams and responding to emergencies during non-standard hours. These skills ensure a safe and secure environment, quick resolution of incidents, and effective coordination with stakeholders during overnight operations.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight security managers, and how can they be addressed?

Effective strategies to address these issues include implementing regular shift rotations, conducting frequent safety checks, and fostering open communication channels with both the security team and daytime management. Additionally, having clear protocols for emergencies and ongoing training helps ensure preparedness and team confidence during overnight operations.

Job Description – Overnight Security Supervisor (3rd Shift)

Unitus Security, Georgia's Premier Security Guard Service for Class A Commercial and Mixed-Use Properties, is seeking Overnight Security Supervisors who demonstrate leadership, accountability, urgency, and a service mindset that consistently exceeds client expectations.

Our Overnight Supervisors are critical to maintaining operational control, officer accountability, and client confidence during non-business hours. This role requires a leader who can operate independently, enforce standards consistently, and ensure the property is secure, compliant, and professionally represented at all times.

At Unitus Security, we promote from within and invest in individuals who lead by example, uphold policy, and align with both company and client expectations. Full-time employees are eligible for benefits including healthcare and paid time off.

Role Expectations amp; Leadership Accountability (Overnight Focus)

All Unitus Supervisors are expected to operate in strict alignment with client-specific post orders, company policies, and operational standards.

Overnight Supervisors are responsible for:

  • Maintaining full operational oversight of the property during overnight hours
  • Ensuring all officers remain awake, alert, in proper uniform, and actively engaged
  • Conducting routine patrols, inspections, and post checks to verify performance and compliance
  • Providing real-time coaching, direction, and corrective action when standards are not met
  • Making independent decisions in the absence of on-site leadership
  • Escalating incidents appropriately and maintaining clear communication with leadership and clients

This role requires strict enforcement of all policies, including attendance, uniform compliance, and post order execution.

Failure to enforce standards, document issues, or uphold expectations may result in corrective action up to and including separation.

Non-Negotiables (Overnight Supervisor Standards)

This position requires strict adherence to the following:

  • Overnight Reliability: Consistent, dependable attendance for overnight shifts, including weekends and holidays. No pattern of late arrivals, call-outs, or attendance issues.
  • Alertness amp; Engagement: Ability to remain fully awake, aware, and actively engaged for the entire shift. Passive presence is not acceptable.
  • Accountability Enforcement: Willingness and ability to hold officers accountable in real time, including addressing uniform violations, performance gaps, and policy non-compliance without delay.
  • Leadership Presence: Maintain a visible, active leadership role throughout the property—this is not a stationary or passive position.
  • Policy Adherence: Strict compliance with all company policies, post orders, and client expectations at all times, without exception.

These standards are essential to the role and are not optional.

Requirements
  • Proven ability to lead teams in a low-supervision, overnight environment
  • Ability to remain alert, engaged, and accountable for the entire shift
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to hold officers accountable in real time
  • Ability to build trust with officers, property management, and clients
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report writing
  • Ability to patrol the property, including extended walking, standing, and stair use

Additional Requirements
  • Must be available for overnight shifts, including weekends and holidays
  • Must pass a drug screen
  • Must have a clear criminal record
  • Must comply with all uniform, grooming, and appearance standards as a condition of employment
  • Must adhere to attendance and call-out policies, including proper notification procedures

Supervisor Duties
  • Lead and manage overnight security operations across the property
  • Conduct post inspections and officer check-ins to ensure compliance and performance
  • Enforce all property rules, company policies, and client directives
  • Address performance concerns through coaching and documented corrective action
  • Ensure all incidents are properly reported and escalated
  • Maintain a visible leadership presence throughout the shift
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and property management when necessary
  • Ensure all post orders are executed with consistency and attention to detail

Qualifications

  • Prior overnight or third-shift leadership experience (Preferred)
  • Hospitality or customer service experience (Preferred)
