What is an overnight safety AI data trainer?

An Overnight Safety AI Data Trainer is a professional who works during nighttime hours to review, label, and curate data that helps train artificial intelligence systems to identify and mitigate safety risks. Their work often involves evaluating content, identifying potentially harmful or unsafe material, and ensuring that AI models can accurately detect and respond to safety concerns. This role is critical for organizations that need their AI to function safely and ethically around the clock, especially in areas like content moderation, fraud detection, and user protection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight safety AI data trainer?

To thrive as an Overnight Safety AI Data Trainer, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with data labeling or annotation processes, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Experience with data annotation tools, basic understanding of AI/ML concepts, and knowledge of safety protocols or compliance systems are typically required. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently during overnight hours are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate data labeling for AI systems, maintain safety standards, and support effective machine learning model development in a time-sensitive environment.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight safety AI data trainers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Overnight Safety AI Data Trainers often encounter challenges such as maintaining focus during night shifts, staying updated on evolving safety guidelines, and managing large volumes of data with high accuracy. To address these, it's important to establish a consistent sleep schedule, take regular short breaks, and actively communicate with team members across different shifts. Leveraging collaboration tools and thorough handover notes also helps ensure continuity and quality of work when collaborating asynchronously with day teams.

What is the difference between Overnight Safety Ai Data Trainer vs Safety Data Analyst?

AspectOvernight Safety Ai Data TrainerSafety Data Analyst
CredentialsRelevant certifications in AI, data training, or safety protocolsDegree in safety management, data analysis, or related field
Work EnvironmentNight shifts, data centers, or AI training facilitiesOffice or field sites during regular hours
Industry UsageAI development companies, tech firms focusing on safety systemsManufacturing, construction, or safety consulting firms

The Overnight Safety Ai Data Trainer primarily focuses on training AI models related to safety protocols during overnight shifts, often working in tech or AI-focused environments. In contrast, Safety Data Analysts analyze safety data to identify risks and improve safety measures during regular hours. While both roles require safety knowledge and data skills, the AI Data Trainer emphasizes AI training and overnight work, whereas the Data Analyst concentrates on data analysis and safety improvements during standard hours.

Job description

Environmental Engineering โ€“ AI Data Trainer

About The Role

We're partnering with the world's leading AI research teams to build smarter, more technically rigorous AI models โ€” and we need environmental engineers to help get there.

As an AI Data Trainer, you'll put your deep domain knowledge to work stress-testing and improving how advanced language models reason through real-world environmental engineering problems. From contaminant transport to hazardous waste remediation, your expertise will directly shape the reliability of AI systems used by engineers, researchers, and policymakers worldwide.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role โ€” work on your own schedule, on problems that matter.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10โ€“40 hours/week
What You'll Do
  • Design Advanced Technical Problems โ€” Create challenging environmental engineering scenarios spanning contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment plants, hydrology, Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), and more
  • Author Gold-Standard Solutions โ€” Develop rigorous, step-byโ€‘step technical solutions โ€” including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and pollutant dispersion simulations โ€” that serve as benchmark responses for AI training
  • Audit AI Outputs โ€” Critically evaluate AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and technical calculations for accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance (EPA, ISO 14001, and others)
  • Sharpen AI Reasoning โ€” Identify where AI reasoning breaks down โ€” incorrect stoichiometry, missed secondary impacts, flawed unit conversions โ€” and provide structured feedback that directly improves model performance
Who You Are
  • Pursuing or holding a Master's or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering (environmental focus), or a closely related field
  • Strong foundational knowledge in one or more core areas: aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste remediation
  • Able to communicate complex technical and ecological concepts clearly and precisely in written form
  • Detailโ€‘oriented โ€” meticulous when it comes to unit conversions, chemical equations, and regulatory logic
  • Selfโ€‘motivated and comfortable working independently on technically demanding tasks
  • No prior AI experience required
Nice to Have
  • Experience with data annotation, data quality review, or evaluation systems
  • Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., AERMOD, SWMM, or similar)
Why Join Us
  • Work on cuttingโ€‘edge AI projects alongside top AI research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible โ€” work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance perks: autonomy, variety, and global collaboration
  • Get rare, handsโ€‘on exposure to how large language models are trained and evaluated
  • Contribute to AI that could shape the future of environmental science and sustainability
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension
