Overnight Rn Adn information

What is an Overnight RN ADN?

An Overnight RN ADN is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has earned an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and works night shifts, typically providing patient care during evening and overnight hours. These nurses are responsible for monitoring patients, administering medications, coordinating with other healthcare professionals, and responding to emergencies during nighttime hours. Overnight RNs with an ADN work in various healthcare settings, such as hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics, where 24-hour patient care is required. They play a crucial role in ensuring continuity of care and patient safety when most administrative and support staff may not be present.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight RN ADN?

To thrive as an Overnight RN with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), you need strong clinical assessment skills, critical thinking, and a current RN license. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, medication administration tools, and standard medical equipment is essential. Excellent communication, resilience, and the ability to stay focused under pressure are vital soft skills for handling night shift challenges. These skills ensure safe, effective patient care and smooth operations during overnight hours when resources may be limited.

What are the typical challenges faced by an Overnight RN ADN and how can they be managed?

Overnight RNs with an ADN often encounter challenges such as managing patient care with limited on-site resources, handling higher patient-to-nurse ratios, and coping with sleep schedule disruptions. Effective teamwork and clear communication with night shift colleagues is essential for patient safety, as is maintaining strong time-management skills to prioritize urgent needs. Utilizing hospital protocols and participating in regular handoff meetings can help ensure continuity of care and support during these shifts.

What is the difference between Overnight Rn Adn vs Registered Nurse?

AspectOvernight Rn AdnRegistered Nurse

Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, overnight shiftsHospitals, clinics, various shifts
Job RoleProviding patient care during overnight hoursProviding patient care across all shifts

Overnight Rn Adn refers to registered nurses working overnight shifts, often with an ADN or BSN credential. Registered Nurse is a broader term encompassing all RNs regardless of shift, with roles spanning day and night. The main difference lies in the shift worked; both roles require similar certifications and work in similar healthcare settings.

What can I do as an overnight RN ADN that is not bedside?

An overnight RN with an ADN degree can pursue roles outside direct patient care, such as case management, health education, telehealth nursing, or clinical research coordination. These positions often require strong communication skills, clinical knowledge, and sometimes additional certifications, and they typically involve working in office or remote environments during overnight shifts.

Overview
Overnight Registered Nurse (RN)
Samaritan Daytop Village is a leading human services organization in New York State serving over 38,000 New Yorkers annually across more than 60 locations through Transitional Housing, Community Based Services, and Residential and Outpatient programs. First Steps Intensive Crisis Stabilization Center (ICSC), operated by Samaritan Daytop Village in Rockland County, is a 24/7 program dually licensed by OMH and OASAS to provide rapid, short-term support for children ages 5+ and adults in mental health or substance use crisis. Our multidisciplinary team utilizes a trauma-informed, harm-reduction framework to stabilize individuals and connect them with long-term care while avoiding unnecessary emergency room visits.
We are seeking a Registered Nurse to provide skilled nursing care for individuals in acute behavioral health crisis. This role is responsible for conducting medical assessments, monitoring withdrawal symptoms, and administering medications as part of a 24/7 multidisciplinary team. You will collaborate closely with providers to manage patient health while delivering trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care. This position is ideal for an RN who excels in fast-paced environments and is passionate about providing high-quality medical support to people navigating mental health and substance use challenges.
Responsibilities
  • Performs comprehensive nursing assessments upon admission and throughout the client's stay, including vital signs and medical screenings
  • Monitors for signs of withdrawal using standardized protocols such as CIWA-Ar and COWS
  • Administers prescribed medications, including psychotropics, MOUD, and withdrawal-management medications
  • Collaborates with psychiatrists and nurse practitioners on medication orders and reconciliation
  • Provides health education to clients and families on medication management, harm reduction, and overdose prevention
  • Responds to medical emergencies and monitors clients for signs of medical decompensation or suicidality
  • Maintains accurate and timely medical records in the Electronic Health Record (Avatar), including the MAR and nursing notes
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and case conferences to coordinate crisis intervention and safety planning
  • Supports infection control and environment-of-care requirements to ensure a safe clinical setting
  • Provides clinical direction to LPNs and medical assistants to ensure high-quality patient care
  • Follows agency policies and protocols

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program (ADN or BSN); BSN preferred
  • Active and unrestricted New York State Registered Professional Nurse license
  • Minimum of one year of nursing experience preferred, ideally in behavioral health, emergency departments, or detoxification settings; new graduates with a strong interest in crisis intervention may be considered
  • Some experience working with pediatrics ages 5 and up preferred
  • Current CPR/BLS certification required; ACLS certification preferred
  • Working knowledge of psychiatric medications, withdrawal protocols (CIWA, COWS), and MOUD
  • Strong clinical assessment skills with the ability to respond effectively to medical emergencies or psychiatric crises
  • Proficiency in documenting within Electronic Health Records (Avatar experience preferred)
  • Commitment to a trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and non-judgmental approach to patient care
  • Demonstrated empathy and respect when working with individuals and families in acute distress

Additional Information
This is a full-time non-exempt role with an hourly rate of $46.70-$55.37 (annualized at 35 hours a week to $85,000-$100,786) with a full benefits package. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 25 days of paid time off, access to a retirement account with an employer to match and tuition reimbursement.
This role is located in Blauvelt, NY with a schedule of Thursday-Sunday 9pm-7am.
