Overnight Rf Test Engineer information

What does an overnight RF test engineer do?

An Overnight RF Test Engineer is responsible for testing and analyzing radio frequency (RF) components, systems, or devices during overnight shifts. Their duties include setting up test equipment, running diagnostic tests, troubleshooting performance issues, and documenting results to ensure systems meet technical specifications. Working overnight ensures continuous operations and helps companies meet tight production schedules. These engineers typically work in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, or electronics manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight RF test engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight RF Test Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, RF theory, troubleshooting, and often a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with RF test equipment (such as spectrum analyzers and network analyzers), automated test systems, and programming languages like Python or LabVIEW is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work independently during overnight shifts are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate testing, timely issue resolution, and reliable operation of RF systems crucial for continuous production or research environments.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight RF test engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Overnight RF Test Engineers often face challenges such as troubleshooting complex equipment issues with limited immediate support, managing fatigue due to unconventional hours, and ensuring consistent communication with daytime teams. To address these, it's important to document test results thoroughly, establish clear handover procedures, and leverage remote support tools. Building strong relationships with both day and night shift colleagues can also help streamline problem-solving and maintain productivity.

What is the difference between Overnight Rf Test Engineer vs Rf Test Technician?

AspectOvernight Rf Test EngineerRf Test Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field, certifications may be preferredAssociate's degree or technical certification in electronics or RF testing
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, testing facilities, often overnight shifts for continuous testingTesting labs, production lines, hands-on testing environment
ResponsibilitiesDesigning, analyzing, and overseeing RF tests, troubleshooting complex issuesPerforming RF tests, recording data, maintaining test equipment

While both roles involve RF testing, the Overnight Rf Test Engineer typically handles complex testing procedures, analysis, and design oversight, often working overnight shifts. The Rf Test Technician focuses on executing tests, data collection, and equipment maintenance. The engineer role requires more advanced education and analytical skills, whereas the technician role emphasizes hands-on testing and operational tasks.

Job description

Our client is seeking a Test Engineer with comprehensive knowledge of aerospace industry testing standards to lead product qualification efforts. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing formal test engineering procedures and coordinating and conducting qualification tests at certified external laboratories. Technical expertise must span electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing, including radiated and conducted emissions, susceptibility, and pin injection, as well as electrical power quality, transients, and environmental testing such as temperature, shock, and vibration.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed test plans and procedures in accordance with RTCA DO-160, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, and MIL-STD-461 requirements.
  • Define and specify necessary support equipment, including wiring harnesses, electrical interfaces, vibration fixtures, instrumentation, and test setup diagrams.
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate internal risk-reduction tests
  • Collect, analyze, and organize testing data to generate comprehensive Qualification Test Reports for customers and management.
  • Provide regular testing status updates to Engineering Managers and Program Managers.
  • Coordinate test schedules with certified external laboratories and manage customer test witnessing.

Supervise testing at external laboratories while maintaining accurate, detailed activity logs.

Required Skills
  • Test Equipment Proficiency: Expert level operating spectrum analyzers, EMI receivers, programmable power quality supplies, pin injection generators, data loggers, oscilloscopes, and digital multimeters (DMMs).
  • EMI/EMC Principles: Deep technical understanding of conducted and radiated emissions, as well as RF susceptibility and immunity testing.
  • RF & Coupling Hardware: Practical knowledge of EMI test antennas (rod, biconical, double-ridged horn, magnetic loop) and injection transformers used for conductive susceptibility testing.
  • Test Chamber Setup: Proven ability to configure complex EMI and environmental test setups, including semi-anechoic chambers, thermal chambers, and vibration shakers.
  • Automation Software: Familiarity with automated EMC test software suites (e.g., TILE, EMC32, or LabWindows/CVI) is highly desirable.

Hardware Prototyping: Strong hands-on mechanical and electrical skills, including wire crimping, component soldering, and test fixture assembly.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (is a plus).
  • Minimum of five years of related experience required.

The salary range is $85,000 - $95,000.
