Job description

Surgical Pre-Admission Testing Registered Nurse

The Surgical Pre-Admission Testing Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for assessing the patient's fitness for surgery and anesthesia. This requires assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of patients through clinical knowledge and skills. All customers should be treated with actions that contribute to high levels of customer service. This position is also responsible for ensuring medical records are complete with the required testing and lab results prior to surgery. This position serves as a liaison between physician offices, clinical nursing staff, surgery scheduling, and anesthesia providers. This position reports to the Prep/PACU Manager. This position has no direct reports.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Retrieves scheduling request slips from ASC surgery scheduler.
  • Initiates and prepares the paper chart according to established protocol
  • Retrieves lab and testing results from various EMRs and data bases (i.e. NextGen, Epic, Cerner).
  • Communicates via email or phone to physician office staff any missing information.
  • Verifies the surgery schedule daily against current charts to look for add-ons or cancellations.
  • Notifies the physician offices of cancellations due to anesthesia review and documents appropriately.
  • Communicates any outstanding missing patient lab and testing information
  • Maintains the departmental standards quality, quantity and accuracy on all patient accounts.
  • Responds to e-mail, patient texts and voice mail messages in a prompt and timely manner.
  • Obtain the patient's current medical information and appropriate history.
  • Review the patient's history and physical report and interview the patient or legal representative.
  • Utilizes ASC Software and practice management system
  • Complete the Pre-op Phone Assessment portion of the Pre-operative record.
  • Provide pertinent pre-procedural patient instructions.
  • Has a clear understanding of the anesthetic agents and medications used by Anesthesia
  • Communicate testing results to Anesthesia for review if applicable.
  • Support Prep/PACU staff as directed by Supervisor.
  • Maintains Prep/PACU annual competencies as directed by Prep/PACU Manager
  • Observes cost containment practices; evaluates and maintains appropriate inventory levels.
  • Respects and complies with decisions made by Leadership; communicates with others in a direct, respectful, and effective manner; will treat customers with actions that exemplify high levels of customer service.
  • Will address and respond to all complaints in a timely manner; will notify Clinical Director of any physician or patient complaints.
  • Will participate in the QI plan as directed by the Clinical Director and comply with Quality Improvement and adverse incident reporting.
  • Actively participates in staff meetings and in-services and professional organizations.
  • Cross-trains to the pre- and post-op areas of the peri-op department as directed by the Prep/PACU Manager
  • Perform other duties or functions as assigned.

Required/Desired Qualifications:

Education:

  • Current Michigan RN license
  • Graduate of accredited School of Nursing preferred

Specialized Knowledge:

  • BCLS required
  • ACLS and PALS preferred; will train
  • Experience in PACU preferred
  • Ambulatory Surgery experience preferred
  • Displays proficiency in navigating multiple electronic medical record systems and other software to access pertinent patient information.

  • Employee must have normal or correctible range of hearing and eyesight.
  • This position is mainly sedentary, with frequent handling of files and medical charts, requiring standing, bending, and lifting up to 5 lbs. maximum.
