Med-Peds Nocturnist HospitalistPosition Summary

The Med-Peds Nocturnist Hospitalist provides comprehensive inpatient medical care to both adult and pediatric patients during overnight hours. Working collaboratively with supervising hospitalist physicians and multidisciplinary care teams, the nocturnist manages admissions, cross-cover responsibilities, and acute changes in patient condition while ensuring continuity of care throughout the night.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide overnight inpatient coverage for adult and pediatric medical services

  • Perform admissions, initial evaluations, and cross-cover assessments

  • Manage acute changes in patient condition and respond to rapid response and code events

  • Develop, implement, and adjust treatment plans for hospitalized patients

  • Order, interpret, and document diagnostic tests, laboratory studies, and imaging

  • Manage medications and ongoing medical therapies for adult and pediatric patients

  • Coordinate care with nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and consulting services

  • Communicate significant clinical changes to on-call physicians and specialty teams

  • Participate in discharge planning and overnight care coordination as needed

  • Provide thorough handoff communication to daytime hospitalist teams

  • Ensure accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record

  • Support hospital quality, safety, and compliance initiatives

Patient Population
  • Adult and pediatric medical inpatients

  • Conditions may include respiratory illness, infections, cardiac and metabolic disorders, neurologic conditions, and post-procedural care

Schedule
  • Night shift only

  • Includes weekends and holidays as required by service coverage needs

Qualifications
  • MD or DO with completion of an accredited Med-Peds residency program

  • Board-eligible or board-certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics

  • Active or eligible state medical licensure

  • ACLS and PALS certification required

  • Prior hospitalist or nocturnist experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills across adult and pediatric populations

  • Ability to manage high-acuity patients with limited overnight resources

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and handoff skills

  • Strong organizational and documentation abilities

  • Commitment to patient-centered, evidence-based inpatient care

Work Environment
  • Inpatient medical and pediatric units

  • Overnight coverage with exposure to acute and complex medical conditions

  • Requires prolonged standing, walking, and rapid response to emergent situations
