As of Jul 3, 2026, the average hourly pay for overnight poison in the United States is $17.08, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.62 and $17.55 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What jobs deal with poison?

Jobs that involve working with poisons include toxicologists, hazardous materials handlers, and forensic scientists. These roles require knowledge of toxic substances, safety protocols, and often specialized training or certifications to handle dangerous chemicals safely.

What is the 3 month rule for jobs?

The 3 month rule in jobs, including roles like overnight poison, often refers to the probation period during which an employer evaluates a new employee's performance and fit for the role. Typically, this period lasts around three months, after which the employee may be confirmed, given feedback, or let go. It is a common practice to assess skills, reliability, and adherence to safety protocols in such timeframes.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight poison control specialists, and how can candidates prepare for them?

Overnight poison control specialists often encounter high-stress situations involving urgent calls from healthcare professionals and the public, sometimes with limited information. Working overnight can also present challenges related to maintaining alertness and clear communication during late hours. Candidates can prepare by developing strong critical thinking skills, effective communication techniques, and self-care strategies for managing shift work. Familiarity with poison databases and protocols is beneficial, as well as practicing empathy to support callers in distress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight Poison Control Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Poison Control Specialist, you need a background in toxicology, pharmacology, or nursing, often with a relevant degree and specialized certification such as the Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI). Familiarity with poison databases, call center software, and clinical reference systems is typically required. Outstanding communication skills, composure under pressure, and empathy are essential for effectively assisting distressed callers and collaborating with medical professionals. These skills ensure accurate, timely advice and proper crisis management, which are critical for patient safety and positive outcomes.

What qualifications do you need to work at poison control?

To work at poison control, candidates typically need a background in healthcare, such as a registered nurse, pharmacist, or medical professional, along with specialized training in toxicology. A bachelor's degree in a related field is often required, and certifications like Certified Specialist in Poison Information (CSPI) may be preferred. Strong communication skills and the ability to handle high-pressure situations are also important.

Overnight poison is not a recognized job title; however, high-paying roles that can reach $4,000 a week without a degree include certain sales positions, real estate agents, commercial pilots with experience, or skilled trades like plumbing or electrical work. These jobs often require specialized skills, certifications, or experience but do not necessarily require a college degree.
