Job description

Join the team that's shaping the future of autonomous robotics and material handling. As an R&D Software Engineer at Toyota Automated Logistics, you'll develop the brains behind intelligent robotic systems, from low-level hardware control to high-level autonomy and perception.
You'll work on real robots. You'll ship real code. You'll help launch entirely new automation products into warehouses and factories across the world.
We don't just build software; we build the future of logistics.
About Us:
Toyota Automated Logistics R&D is the New Product Development (NPD) division of the company. Our mission is to develop original products that expand Toyota Automated Logistics' automation capabilities, enabling our commissioning and systems teams to deliver integrated solutions that give our customers a competitive edge.
Our ~70-person team is distributed between our Boise, Dallas, and Indianapolis offices, and includes experts in mechanical, electrical, software, and AI disciplines, all with a strong foundation in robotics technology. Beyond our Toyota Automated Logistics offices, we collaborate heavily with our Toyota family partners to innovate and share our technology globally.
Software engineers on our team are true full-stack robotics developers, with opportunities to work across the entire software stack - from high-level autonomy, AI, and perception to low-level motor control, hardware interfaces, and everything in-between. We take products from concept to production-ready designs, and we execute our software on real robot hardware in live customer environments.
Above all else, we know that our strength lies in our people. Through strong mentorship, thoughtful planning, and a supportive team culture, we create space for engineers to grow while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Your Mission:
As a Software Engineer on our R&D team, you'll help architect and implement the software that enables our robots to think, move, and interact in the real world. You'll work closely with teammates across disciplines to build solutions that are both technically robust and practically deployable - from early design through to testing and real-world operation.
You'll be expected to take strong ownership of your work. You'll have the opportunity to lead the design and implementation of software systems, while also engaging in pair programming, design processes, and code reviews that are core to our engineering culture. You'll get hands-on with real hardware and test your code on live systems.
In this role, you won't just build software. You'll help shape how our systems behave in the real world, with the support of a team that values both innovation and thoughtful execution.
Job Functions:
  • Contribute directly to ROS-based C++ and Python codebases, running on Linux systems.
  • Create software designs, host design and code reviews, and engage with SDLC processes.
  • Engage in scoping, planning, and scheduling your work in an Agile workflow.
  • Engage in, and help drive, best practices and SOPs for software development.
  • Create test plans and engage in hands-on testing and verification on live Robots & Hardware.
  • Uphold our safety standards when interacting with live equipment.
  • Participate in field trials and customer on-site Beta deployments as we release new products.
  • Work with other Toyota Automated Logistics business units throughout the release process of R&D products (Manufacturing, Commissioning, Marketing, etc).

Travel Requirements:
  • Up To 10% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Toyota Automated Logistics)

Required Qualifications and Preferred Skills:
  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or similar field
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Experience designing and implementing production software systems.
  • Experience with Agile development environments and a strong drive for SOPs.
  • Expert in Linux environment and developing for Linux systems.
  • Expertise in C/C++ and Python, Experience with other software technologies (Web Development, SQL, etc.).
  • Experience with CI/CD and testing methodologies and implementation.
  • Experience with Containerization and Deployment Strategies.
  • Experience with version control systems, GIT preferred.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System).
  • Experience with low-level communication interfaces - TCP/IP, Sockets, CAN, CANOpen.
  • Experience developing for, or interfacing with, embedded systems and microcontrollers.
  • Experience with Robotics technologies (Motor Controllers, Lidars, Encoders, and various sensor technologies).
  • Exposure to, or development experience with, Autonomous Navigation Systems.

  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long term without sponsorship.
  • Employees must follow all information security policies, protect confidential data, complete required training, and report any suspected security incidents to support our information security controls.
