NDE Inspector, Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Responsibilities:
- Perform internal and external inspections to determine if a weldment/structure meets the acceptance criteria of a specific code, standard, or documentย
- Interpret codes and specifications in accordance with the drawing requirementsย
- Use a computer to compile and submit data of acceptance or rejection of inspections, as well as for inter-office communicationsย
- Recommend and approve repairs as well as perform visual inspection of work in progress and completed workย
- Monitor welding processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), submerged arc welding (SAW), and plasma arc welding (PAW) to ensure they are performed in accordance with qualified proceduresย
- Verify and document welder qualificationsย
- Verify the compliance of base metals with the applicable specificationsย
- Appraise welding joint designs and joint preparations for compliance with drawingย
- Verify proper fit, cleanliness, and environmental conditionsย
- Verify tack weld qualityย
- Verify preheat and interpass temperaturesย
- Assure the proper control and handling of welding consumablesย
- Verify the interpass and final cleaningย
- Assure product conformity to drawings and specificationsย
- Verify cleanliness and weld surface qualityย
- Perform various NDT examinations (VT), (PT), (MT), (UT) ย
- Oversee repair activitiesย
- Verify the proper performance of post-weld heat treatmentsย
- Confirm adequate documentation of fabrication and inspection activitiesย
- Assist in training and developing of other teammatesย
- Support the development of NDE inspection techniques for complex geometriesย
- Interpret and review engineering drawings as requiredย
- Interpret, evaluate, communicate, and report findings to production and engineering teamsย
- The ability to work overtime, weekends, and regular, punctual attendance is required
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalency certificateย ย
- Previous fitting and welding experience is required
- Must be able to read and understand blueprints and shop drawings and pass an inspector test
- Must be able to perform basic math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry and some trigonometry
- Current American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certificationย ย
ORย ย
- Currently certified Level II in at least two NDE Methods (VT), (PT), (MT), (UT) to ASNT SNT-TC-1A or equivalent qualification
Preferred Skills and Experience:ย
- 5 years of experience in a steel fabrication shop environment
- Additional nondestructive Evaluation Level II or III certifications in line with ASNT TC-1A guidance in one of the following methods: Visual Inspection (VT), Liquid Dye Penetrant Inspection (PT), or Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT), or Ultrasonic Inspection (UT or UT-SW)
- 2+ years of experience as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)ย
- Extensive knowledge of industry standards including AISC, AWS, CWB, and ASMEย
- Working knowledge of surface and volumetric NDE methods
- Level II in SSPC/NACE/AMPPย ย
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to lift 50lbs unassisted, bend, stretch, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, reach, twist, stoop, push, pull, sit, and walk frequently and be able to climb 25 ft.ย ย ย
- Exposure to temperature fluctuations and loud work environment.
- Occasional opportunity for travel with overnight stays.ย ย
