Position Overview:
The Technical Procurement Engineer provides specialized technical expertise in support of strategic sourcing, supplier development, and the procurement of complex, highly engineered materials and services. As a key technical resource within BWXT Supply Chain, this position partners closely with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Program Management to ensure all procured materials, components, and services meet technical, quality, regulatory, cost, and schedule requirements. The role primarily supports BEO and contributes to broader Tennessee Operations initiatives as business needs evolve.

Your Day-to-Day as a Technical Procurement Engineer:
  • Support strategic sourcing, negotiation, and procurement of materials and services, including raw materials, machining, fabrication, forgings, welding materials, and other technical commodities.
  • Conduct supplier assessments such as audits, competency evaluations, qualification activities, and ongoing surveillance.
  • Develop, review, and issue procurement specifications, technical packages, statements of work, subcontractor submittal requirements, and inspection and testing plans.
  • Review supplier proposals, technical exceptions, manufacturing plans, inspection results, calibration records, and certifications to ensure full compliance with requirements.
  • Serve as the primary engineering interface with suppliers for subcontracted components, ensuring fabrication processes meet all technical and quality standards. Lead and contribute to internal technical teams evaluating supplier performance and resolving issues involving discrepant or degraded materials.
  • Collaborate with engineering, purchasing, and quality teams to identify, evaluate, and qualify new suppliers. Support the development of cost estimates and contribute to program efficiencies through process improvements.
  • Apply independent judgment to resolve complex technical procurement challenges while meeting cost, schedule, and compliance expectations.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience in technical procurement, materials management, or purchasing.
  • Experience with supplier qualification, ASME NQA-1, FAR/DFAR/DEAR regulations, and DOE facility operations.
  • Strong technical understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing processes, quality control, and failure analysis.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, interpret complex technical requirements, and prepare detailed procurement documentation.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Q clearance.

  • Engineering degree
    • Candidates without an engineering degree but with demonstrated technical competency and direct experience supporting engineering, supplier qualification, or technical procurement will also be considered.

Pay: $70,000 - $103,000
The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $70,000 and $103,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
