Job description

HIRING NOW!

Be part of history in the making. Weโ€™re hiring now for our Grand Opening team at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. Apply today to start work at the end of May!

THE THEODORE ROOSEVELT PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY FOUNDATION

โ€œBelieve you can, and youโ€™re halfway there.โ€ -Theodore Roosevelt

Since 2014, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation (TRPLF) has been planning and building a new, ambitious kind of presidential library and museum. Other presidential libraries tell the story of a single individual, but the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) โ€“ being built more than a century after T.R.โ€™s death โ€“ will do more than preserve history. The TRPL will be a peopleโ€™s library, bringing Rooseveltโ€™s values and relentless spirit to life at a critical time in our nation and world, while simultaneously championing the stories of all who โ€œdare greatly, think boldly, care deeply, and live passionately.โ€

The library is currently being constructed in Medora, North Dakota, with a milestone planned for July 4, 2026 โ€“ Americaโ€™s 250th anniversary. Participants at the TRPL will learn from โ€“ not just about โ€“ Rooseveltโ€™s story, being transformed into the same stunning Badlands that served as the fulcrum in T.R.โ€™s incredible life story.

Guided by the pillar principles of leadership, citizenship, and conservation, the Foundation has partnered with innovative partners โ€“ like the award-winning architecture firm, Snรธhetta, and the best-in-class story crafters, the Future of Storytelling โ€“ to build an institution like no other. With plans to be the most sustainable presidential library and campus ever, a revolutionary approach to interpretive design, and programming that will spread the libraryโ€™s message into neighboring Theodore Roosevelt National Park and beyond across the globe, the opportunity to join a talented team in building and opening this institution is truly unique.

About the Role

The Protective Services Attendant (Night Shift) is a cross-trained, frontline role within the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation safety and security team. This position supports overnight operations across the Libraryโ€™s buildings, exhibitions, trails, and public spaces, while also rotating through scheduled shifts in the security control room. During night hours, team members maintain a vigilant presence across the campus, balancing routine patrols with centralized monitoring, communication, and coordination through security systems.

This role is essential to overnight readinessโ€”ensuring the campus remains secure, systems are actively monitored, and any risks or incidents are identified and addressed in real time. It requires strong situational awareness, the ability to stay focused in a low-activity environment, clear communication, and disciplined adherence to protocol. The position reports to the Manager of Protective Services and works under the day-to-day direction of the Protective Services Lead.

Core Competencies

  • Overnight Safety & Security Presence: Maintains a professional, attentive presence during low-traffic hours, ensuring the campus remains secure while supporting occasional late-night visitors or staff.
  • Security Systems Monitoring: Demonstrates strong proficiency with CCTV, access control, alarms, and radio communications, with the ability to stay focused during extended monitoring periods.
  • Situational Awareness: Remains highly alert in a quieter environment, proactively identifying irregularities, safety concerns, or emerging risks across the campus.
  • Emergency Response & Judgment: Responds to incidents or alarms with composure and sound judgment, often acting as the first point of response during overnight hours.
  • Independent Work & Communication: Works confidently and independently while maintaining clear, timely communication with team members and leadership as needed.
  • Protocol & Documentation Discipline: Follows established procedures and completes accurate, detailed overnight reports, logs, and incident documentation.
  • Reliability & Accountability: Demonstrates consistency, punctuality, and strong attention to detail, recognizing the critical nature of overnight coverage and site readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Support overnight protective services operations across all buildings, grounds, and operational areas of the Library.
  • Conduct routine overnight patrols, safety checks, and inspections to identify risks, hazards, or irregular activity.
  • Monitor and operate security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion alarms, radio communications) during control room shifts with sustained focus.
  • Serve as the primary overnight communication point, coordinating between field staff, leadership, and emergency responders as needed.
  • Monitor access points and ensure proper security protocols are followed during limited overnight access periods.
  • Receive, assess, document, and escalate incidents, alarms, or safety concerns in accordance with established procedures.
  • Respond to incidents, medical situations, or emergencies calmly and effectively, often as the first point of response overnight.
  • Support site readiness, identifying and reporting issues to ensure the campus is prepared for daytime operations.
  • Maintain accurate incident reports, overnight logs, and required documentation with strong attention to detail.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, drills, system checks, and ongoing training to maintain operational readiness.
  • Provide real-time updates and coordination support to team members while assigned to the control room.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Preference for Customer Service or Security related experience

Requirements

  • Ability to perform a combination of extended standing and walking patrols along with seated monitoring, maintaining focus during overnight hours
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to alarms, incidents, or emergency communications, often as the primary overnight responder
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and physically respond to emergencies or medical situations as needed
  • Comfortable working in outdoor environments at night, including varied weather and rugged Badlands terrain
  • Availability to work overnight, weekend, holiday, and special-event shifts as scheduled
  • Must be able to work onsite in Medora, ND

Benefits

Full benefits include 403(b), medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, as well as 20 days of paid time off and 10 days of holidays. Hourly rate of pay $22.00/hour.
