Description This position is responsible for providing investigative support to the department's gun-violence reduction efforts, through data entry (and analysis), into various formats and databases; duties will include entering (acquiring) ballistics evidence into the Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS), performing image and correlation reviews using the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), and producing crime gun intelligence and leads for follow-up investigations; and perform related duties as assigned. This position will be assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division. The incumbent will work according to set procedures, under close supervision.
This work is considered moderate in nature and must be able to fire all types of firearms, including those with heavy recoil. The work requires physical abilities to lift firearms boxes, etc., weighing up to approximately 40 pounds. Vision must be sufficient to utilize microscopes and computer monitors for the enlargement and evaluation of detailed markings; and exposure to solvents and oils
Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim lights, dust and pollens, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, explosives, violence; and is dynamic that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities and needs. Essential Job Functions Examines and then enters ballistics evidence into the Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS); Performs ballistic image and correlation reviews; Safely handles and test-fire firearms; Transports evidence from the Columbia Police Department to other law enforcement agencies; Provides court testimony and produces analytical products; Enters seized firearms into the ATF e-Trace system; Enters data into spreadsheets and other databases; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: High school diploma or GED; Six (6) months of relevant experience with a working knowledge of firearms; Valid South Carolina Class "D" Driver's License.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Out-of-state overnight travel for initial training (four (4) non-consecutive weeks); Occasional travel for training and court. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to learn, and adhere to, established laboratory procedures and protocol; Basic knowledge of Windows-based computer applications and software; Excellent communication skills; Ability to analyze, report, and share information; Ability to summarize, tabulate or format data or information in accordance with a prescribed schema or plan to facilitate the identification and extraction of useful information; and Knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages.
