Job Summary

We are seeking a dependable and motivated Fire Sprinkler Fitter Apprentice to join our Fire Sprinkler Department. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals who are interested in learning the fire sprinkler trade and building a long-term career in the fire protection industry.

The Fire Sprinkler Fitter Apprentice will support journeymen, foremen, and other members of the installation team with the installation of residential and commercial fire sprinkler systems. Apprentices will work with both residential plastic piping systems and commercial steel piping systems, with assignments varying based on company and project needs.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliable attendance, willingness to learn, attention to safety, and the ability to follow directions. Apprentices are encouraged to participate in all available training programs offered by Symons Fire Protection and approved external training providers.

Core Responsibilities1. Fire Sprinkler Installation

• Assist journeymen and foremen with the installation of residential and commercial fire sprinkler systems.
• Learn proper installation methods, tools, materials, and procedures used in the fire sprinkler trade.
• Assist with handling, positioning, assembling, and installing fire sprinkler piping and related components.
• Follow verbal, written, and diagram-based instructions from supervisors and experienced team members.
• Perform assigned tasks efficiently while maintaining company quality and safety standards.

2. Safety & Compliance

• Follow all company safety policies and required safety procedures while working on job sites.
• Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, and high-visibility vests.
• Maintain awareness of surroundings and potential job-site hazards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Follow applicable OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and company safety requirements.

3. Material & Tool Handling

• Safely carry, move, stage, and organize tools, piping, fittings, and other materials.
• Handle tools and materials weighing up to 70 lbs. as part of regular job duties.
• Assist with loading, unloading, and moving materials throughout the job site.
• Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition and report damaged or missing equipment.

4. Documentation & Communication

• Maintain accurate documentation related to work performed.
• Communicate effectively with foremen, journeymen, supervisors, and other team members.
• Report job-site issues, safety concerns, damaged materials, or equipment problems to the appropriate supervisor.
• Use company communication and technology tools as required.

5. Training & Development

• Participate in company-sponsored and external training programs.
• Complete required certifications and training within established timeframes.
• Develop knowledge of fire sprinkler installation methods, materials, tools, and industry standards.
• Demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills and take on additional responsibilities as proficiency develops.

6. Attendance & Work Standards

• Maintain reliable and predictable attendance.
• Arrive at work and job sites on time and prepared to perform assigned duties.
• Take scheduled breaks and lunch periods in accordance with company policy and applicable state law.
• Maintain a professional attitude and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or GED preferred/required.
• Previous construction, mechanical, plumbing, fire sprinkler, or skilled-trade experience is helpful but not required.
• Must demonstrate a genuine interest in learning the fire sprinkler trade.
• Blazemaster, OSHA 10, and CPR/First Aid training must be obtained within the first 3 months of employment.

Language Skills

• Ability to read, write, and speak English.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to read lists, reports, basic documentation, and work-related information.

Computer & Technology Skills

• Basic computer and mobile-device skills.
• Ability to learn and use company systems, including Paycom, Outlook, and BuilderTrend.
• Ability to communicate using mobile devices as required for work.

Mathematical Skills

• Basic math skills are required.
• Ability to perform basic calculations involving figures and amounts.
• Ability to understand basic rates, ratios, percentages, measurements, and dimensions.

Reasoning Ability

• Ability to apply common sense and practical judgment when completing assigned tasks.
• Ability to follow instructions provided in written, verbal, or diagram form.
• Ability to identify and communicate basic job-site problems or concerns to a supervisor.

Physical Requirements

This position requires physical stamina and the ability to safely perform construction-related activities throughout the workday. Employees must be able to stand, walk, climb, reach, bend, crouch, kneel, balance, and work with their hands and arms.

The position requires the ability to lift and handle materials and tools weighing up to 100 lbs., as well as perform repetitive physical tasks associated with fire sprinkler installation.

Physical requirements include:

1. Standing: Remain standing for extended periods while performing job duties.
2. Walking: Walk and move throughout active construction sites.
3. Climbing: Ascend and descend ladders and similar equipment.
4. Crouching: Bend the body downward or forward by bending the legs and spine.
5. Kneeling: Kneel as necessary to perform installation and construction tasks.
6. Handling: Seize, hold, move, and work with tools, piping, and materials.
7. Lifting: Raise and lower tools, piping, fittings, and other materials.
8. Reaching: Extend hands and arms in various directions to perform installation tasks.
9. Stooping: Bend the body downward and forward at the knees or waist.
10. Balancing: Maintain balance while working on ladders, elevated surfaces, and uneven construction areas.
11. Vision: Possess sufficient visual acuity to perform assigned work accurately, including the ability to distinguish colors.
12. Talking & Hearing: Communicate effectively by phone and in person with coworkers, supervisors, and other job-site personnel.

Location Requirement: This position is open to local candidates currently residing in the Southern California area. Candidates must be able to reliably report to assigned job sites as required. Remote work is not available for this position.
