Overnight Environmental Biology information

What is an overnight environmental biologist?

An Overnight Environmental Biologist is a professional who studies ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental conditions during nighttime hours. Their work often involves conducting field research, monitoring animal behavior, collecting environmental samples, and ensuring environmental compliance during overnight shifts. This role is critical for gathering data on nocturnal species and understanding environmental changes that occur outside of regular daytime hours. Overnight Environmental Biologists may work for research institutions, environmental consulting firms, or government agencies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an overnight environmental biologist?

To thrive as an Overnight Environmental Biologist, a solid background in biology, ecology, or environmental science—often with a relevant degree—is essential, along with experience in fieldwork and data collection. Familiarity with tools such as GIS mapping software, environmental monitoring instruments, and compliance with safety protocols is typically required. Strong observational skills, adaptability to nocturnal work schedules, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate environmental assessments and successful project outcomes during nighttime operations.

What unique challenges do environmental biologists working overnight shifts face, and how can they prepare for them?

Overnight environmental biology roles often involve fieldwork or monitoring activities during nighttime hours, which can present challenges such as reduced visibility, limited access to immediate resources, and adjusting to an unconventional sleep schedule. Professionals in this role should be prepared to use specialized equipment like night vision tools, practice safety protocols for working in remote or potentially hazardous areas, and develop strategies to manage fatigue and maintain alertness. Building strong communication with daytime teams ensures seamless data handover and continuity in research or compliance activities.

What is the difference between Overnight Environmental Biology vs Environmental Technician?

Employer & IndustryResearch institutions, environmental agencies, conservation groupsEnvironmental consulting firms, government agencies, labs

Overnight Environmental Biology roles typically involve research, data analysis, and fieldwork during overnight hours, often requiring a background in biology or environmental science. In contrast, Environmental Technicians focus on sampling, monitoring, and data collection during regular hours. Both roles support environmental efforts but differ mainly in work hours and specific responsibilities.

Are environmental biologists in demand?

Environmental biologists are in steady demand due to increasing environmental concerns and regulations. They work in research, conservation, and policy roles, often requiring skills in data analysis and fieldwork, with employment opportunities available in government agencies, consulting firms, and non-profit organizations.

What can you do with overnight environmental biology?

An overnight environmental biology role involves conducting field research, monitoring ecosystems, and collecting data during night shifts. It requires knowledge of ecological systems, safety protocols, and often the use of specialized tools or equipment. This position supports environmental conservation and research efforts by providing data outside regular hours.

What jobs can I get with an overnight environmental biology degree?

With an overnight environmental biology degree, you can pursue roles such as environmental technician, field researcher, or conservation assistant, often involving fieldwork and data collection. These positions may require knowledge of laboratory tools, data analysis, and sometimes certifications like OSHA or safety training, and they often involve working outdoors or in labs during non-traditional hours.

What You'll Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, natural resources, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Valid USFWS Section 10 permit for bat mist-netting surveys in the Eastern USA.
  • 4+ years of experience conducting bat surveys and managing related tasks.
  • Expertise in mist-netting, radio telemetry, and roost emergence counts.
  • Familiarity with acoustic bat surveys and associated software.
  • Strong technical writing and data analysis skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in dynamic environments.
  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
  • Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork in potentially remote areas for extended periods, including overnight travel.
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in biology or related discipline.
  • Experience with ArcGIS, GPS-based survey equipment, and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of NEPA, ESA Section 7 & 10, and state-level environmental reviews.
  • Previous work on renewable energy, transmission, or pipeline projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mist-netting and radio-telemetry surveys for protected bat species.
  • Oversee acoustic surveys and review acoustic data.
  • Develop survey protocols, budgets, and proposals.
  • Conduct desktop site reviews and submit permit applications.
  • Analyze data and prepare high-quality reports for clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with NEPA, ESA, and other environmental regulations.
