Overnight Embedded Systems Engineer information

What is an overnight embedded systems engineer?

Overnight Embedded Systems Engineers are professionals who specialize in designing, developing, and troubleshooting embedded systems during overnight or late-night shifts. These engineers work on hardware and software components that are integrated into devices such as industrial machines, medical equipment, or consumer electronics. Overnight shifts are often necessary in industries that require 24/7 support for critical systems or to ensure that projects with tight deadlines stay on track. Their responsibilities may include debugging, firmware updates, system testing, and responding to urgent technical issues that arise outside of standard business hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight embedded systems engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight Embedded Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems design, programming (C/C++), and hardware-software integration, often backed by a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills, especially when working independently or during off-hours. These abilities ensure the engineer can efficiently identify and resolve issues, maintain system reliability, and support continuous operations during overnight shifts.

What are some unique challenges faced by overnight embedded systems engineers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Overnight Embedded Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited real-time support from colleagues or external vendors, as most teams operate during standard business hours. This requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently when troubleshooting system issues or deploying updates. Effective documentation, clear communication with the day team through shift handovers, and leveraging remote collaboration tools can help ensure continuity and minimize disruptions. Additionally, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is important, as overnight shifts can impact sleep patterns and overall well-being.

Job description

Job Description

Are you driven by curiosity, energized by complex challenges, and motivated to dissect the unknown? Join a cutting‑edge team where your expertise directly shapes mission outcomes and national security. We’re looking for engineers who excel at uncovering how systems work (and why), thrive in an environment where innovation moves fast and the stakes are high.

HII Mission Technologies seeks out‑of‑the‑box thinkers who can uncover difficult‑to‑activate corner‑case bugs and vulnerabilities in the gate‑level netlists of FPGA and ASIC designs. Candidates will use industry‑standard functional verification tools (Questa, VCS, Verdi), logical equivalence tools (OneSpin 360EC), and proprietary software to verify design function and integrity. Common verification targets include embedded processors, DSPs, filters, transceivers, data links, systems‑on‑chip, and decoders.

Responsibilities
  • Develop models, transactors, stimuli, monitors, and test benches for simulating and uncovering hidden behaviors in gate‑level digital netlists.
  • Produce clear documentation and test cases demonstrating identified bugs or deviations from the specification.
  • Collaborate effectively with teammates to produce cohesive results and improve processes.
Salary Ranges

Level 2: $90,000–$95,000
Level 3: $120,000–$130,000
Level 4: $160,000–$175,000
Level 5: $185,000–$190,000

Minimum Qualifications
  • Level 2: 2 years relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; 0 years with a Master’s; or High School Diploma or equivalent with 6 years relevant experience.
  • Level 3: 5 years relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree; 3 years with a Master’s; 0 years with a PhD; or High School Diploma or equivalent with 9 years relevant experience.
  • Level 4: 9 years relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree; 7 years with a Master’s; 4 years with a PhD; or High School Diploma or equivalent with 13 years relevant experience.
  • Level 5: 15 years relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree; 13 years with a Master’s; 10 years with a PhD; or High School Diploma or equivalent with 19 years relevant experience.
  • Willingness to obtain a Top‑Secret security clearance.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with modern digital verification and modeling languages: SystemVerilog, SystemC, C/C++, MATLAB, etc.
  • Directed, constrained‑random, and assertion‑based verification techniques at the gate, interface, and transaction levels.
  • Experience with modern, commercial‑grade functional simulators (Xcelium, Incisive, Questa, VCS, Riviera‑Pro, etc).
  • Writing scripts for batched verification tasks: Python, Bash, Tcl, make files.
  • Revision control systems for maintaining, sharing, and deploying code: Perforce, Git, SVN, etc.
  • Familiarity with debugging and isolating issues with gate‑level netlists.
Preferred Requirements
  • Familiarity with object‑oriented, embedded, assembly, or machine code programming.
  • Software or hardware reverse‑engineering (IDA Pro, Ghidra).
  • FPGA design or verification experience.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance.
  • Familiarity with testing and verification techniques for IC trust, assurance, or security.
  • Experience with logical equivalence checkers (OneSpin 360‑EC, ESP, Conformal EC).
  • Experience with formal ABV.
