Job description

Renewable Energy Electrical Modeling Engineer – WSP USA. Location: Boulder, CO or Irvine, CA (remote or travel may be required). Full‑time.

Provide technical assistance and guidance for multi‑site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects. Routinely support research, design, concept development, and detailed design for construction of renewable energy generating facilities (wind, solar, BESS), power distribution, regulation, protection and control systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Determine methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data on renewable energy balance of plant components, equipment specifications for procurement, IFR/IRC design, IEEE/NESC/NERC standards.
  • Review and advise on third‑party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
  • Perform advanced electrical engineering work (single line, three‑line, wiring diagrams, schematics, cable schedules, grounding grid design, lightning protection).
  • Incorporate future‑ready techniques, concept development, operating strategies, equipment sizing, cabling, AC/DC panel design, conduit/trenching.
  • Support senior engineers with research and recommendations of components and field equipment applications.
  • Verify site characteristics, provide technical input on engineering, design, testing, maintenance, construction procedures.
  • Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, grounding, short‑circuit study, protective device coordination, one‑line diagram development, protective relaying, substation switchyard layouts.
  • Develop plans, specifications, cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; update electrical infrastructure layout plans in coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub‑consultants, clients.
  • Work individually or cross‑functionally on multiple concurrent projects; assist with installations, cost/quantity calculations, and ensure compliance with specifications, permits, regulatory analysis.
  • Prepare data visualizations (tables, charts), reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for interpretation or presentation.
  • Maintain high quality and responsiveness to client requirements; provide guidance and training to entry‑level engineers on electrical modelling and simulations.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations explaining research, findings, and recommendations to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design or construction issues.
  • Assist in analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data from field investigations; develop action plans for risk mitigation.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements for data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, record compliance and retention.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
  • Remain current with the latest electrical engineering techniques; collaborate with other engineers and planners on federal, state, regional, local projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making; adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 5–7 years of post‑education experience as an electrical engineer providing design deliverables for large capital projects.
  • Engineer in Training certification.
  • Experience with operations and project controls for reporting and proposal development.
  • Proficient knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build, permitting and project work.
  • Experience in infrastructure planning, design, construction management; rehabilitation and new design projects.
  • Working knowledge of engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance and record‑keeping.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and calculate based on electrical principles, plans and regulations.
  • Project management experience on small to mid‑level projects; tracking hours and expenses.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy system design principles.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations; apply regulations and policies.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • High self‑leadership, attention to detail, multi‑tasking, prioritization.
  • Ability to work independently and guide junior team members with QA/QC rigor.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline‑specific design software (Cymcap, CDEGS, WinIGS, PSSE, PSCAD, Aspen, SKM, ETAP), technology, math, predictive models, spreadsheets, tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills for testing results, data collation, statistical analysis.
  • Ability to direct subcontractors and others safely and efficiently.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety; compliance with WSP's health, safety, drug/alcohol, harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering licensure or certification.
