Job description

Job Summary

A Data Center Cabling Lead Technician/Foreman will take responsibility for the installation of connectivity solutions.ย  A Lead Tech can be assigned to a single project or multiple projects, depending on size and complexity.ย  The Lead Tech must motivate work crews, develop intimate customer relationships, and ensure a timely, high-quality installation that meets specific customer requirements.ย

Lead cable tech/Foreman Responsibilities

  • Installation of low-voltage cabling systems including all aspects of the installation process:
    • Ability to understand complex wiring diagrams and installation instructions
    • Ability to terminate common types of fiber optic fittings (SC, ST, LC, etc.) efficiently and to industry, manufacturer, and AFL standards
    • Ability to efficiently terminate copper cabling to industry, manufacturer, and AFL standards
    • Ability to testing requirements for the different categories of copper media (Category 5e, Category 6 etc.).
    • Reads and interprets all floor plans, drawings, specifications, and cut sheets
    • Properly sets up a variety of testers
    • Performs system testing and troubleshooting as required
    • Terminate, label, test and troubleshoot low voltage cabling installations
  • Lead teams of 3-5 Technicians and Installers to complete project tasks
  • Train technicians and installers to complete all the tasks and responsibilities of their positions
  • Assist in developing technicians to complete all the tasks and responsibilities of a Lead Technician
  • Oversee and lead job site organization and basic housekeeping maintenance
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
  • Maintain satisfactory compliance with customer security requirements
  • Excel in technical tasks such as testing and troubleshooting
  • Ability to complete mission critical buildouts, rack construction (In-Row and Out-of-Row), ladder rack installation, wire management, grounding, etc.
  • Ability to configure and set-up test equipment to perform all required tests on each category of copper media using a variety of manufacturer test equipment
  • Ability to configure, operate and analyze test data from Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR)
  • Ability to maintain a calm and collected demeanor in difficult and stressful situations
  • Ability to motivate work crews
  • Perform a project walk-through at or before the start of the installation with the Project Manager.ย  Identify and resolve any areas of concern or uncertainty.
  • May act as a single point of contact to the customer during the installation for any installation related issue or concern (i.e., change orders)
  • Assign crew leader(s) as needed to properly manage assigned projects
  • Inform Project Manager on a weekly basis on project progress, problems, milestones, and any other pertinent aspects of the installation
  • Ensure that the installation conforms to industry standards, applicable codes, and the project Scope of Work
  • Manage sub-contractors as necessary to ensure conformance to timelines, AFL work policies and performance standards
  • Download and archive test results
  • Maintain a neat and orderly worksite
  • Understands, adheres to, and promotes the Environmental, Health & Safety policies of AFL Telecom
  • Attend classes and training sessions, as requested by AFL management, to obtain and maintain vendor certifications
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager
  • Full working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 yearsโ€™ data cabling experience
  • BICSI Certificates โ€“ Install I or Installer II (preferred)
  • Must have the ability to install, terminate & test low voltage cables & fiber optical cables. Strong understanding of low voltage infrastructure and related services
  • Ability to understand complex wiring diagrams and installation instructions.ย 
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening
  • Valid Driverโ€™s License
  • Finger & wrist dexterity & hand/eye coordination
  • Ability to work from heights such as man lifts, scissor lifts & roof tops utilizing proper fall protection
  • Ability to use small hand tools
  • Ability to use power tools
  • Climbing of stairs and ladders
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, lift up to 50 lbs., and drive a vehicle

  • Ability to accept periodic assignments that involve travel away from immediate district office area based on client needs, business needs and project scope
