What is an overnight computer?

An Overnight Computer typically refers to a person or system responsible for running computer operations or processing tasks during the nighttime hours, often when regular business operations are closed. In many organizations, overnight computers manage batch processing, data backups, and system maintenance to ensure that IT infrastructure is ready for the next business day. This role may also involve monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the completion of automated jobs. It is essential for maintaining smooth operations and minimizing downtime for critical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight computer operator?

To thrive as an Overnight Computer Operator, you need a solid understanding of computer systems, data processing, and troubleshooting, often supported by an associate degree or relevant technical certification. Familiarity with operating systems like Windows, Linux, or mainframe environments, as well as monitoring and batch processing tools such as IBM Tivoli or CA Workload Automation, is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills are key soft skills for managing system alerts and reporting issues during off-hours. These skills are essential to maintain system uptime, quickly resolve technical problems, and support uninterrupted business operations overnight.

  • Remotely monitor Uniqlo locations for maintenance and emergency repairs, providing remote access and assistance when needed.
  • Oversee the Genetec Platform and daily health and performance of CCTV, access control, burglar alarms, and RFID technology.
  • Complete audits as assigned on overnight shifts.
  • Oversee remote intrusion protection and monitoring of facilities for security and safety.

What You Bring:

  • Solid understanding of Canadian federal, provincial, and local laws related to Loss Prevention and Security.
  • Proficiency with Loss Prevention technology, including CCTV, EAS, Access Control, and Intrusion Detection systems.
  • Experience conducting internal investigations using exception reporting and compliance auditing systems.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills to respond to and follow up on overnight incidents, including contact with external partners such as law enforcement.
  • Excellent analytical and project management abilities, with a proven track record as a strategic thinker.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion, strong business acumen, and ethical standards.
  • Proficient with MS-Office (Excel, Word, etc.) and Microsoft platform tools (Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Capable of multitasking, efficiently managing time, and adapting to shifting business priorities without sacrificing attention to detail.
  • Able to work quickly and efficiently in a remote environment with minimal direct supervision.
  • Willingness to work on a flexible schedule, including overnight and weekend shifts, as required by the department and company.
  • Able to work both in-office and remotely; minimum three days per week in office required.
  • Ability to both speak and write in French is required due to regular contact with Law Enforcement in French-speaking areas.
  • Regular travel within the assigned location is required; occasional additional travel may be necessary based on business needs.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary, performance bonus, and comprehensive benefits package.
  • High-visibility role with collaboration across global and regional executive teams.
  • Career growth in a company that values ambition, innovation, integrity, and performance.
  • A results-driven, entrepreneurial culture where your decisions drive real business impact.
