Job description

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to work in Pediatrics Infectious Disease. This position develops and analyzes mathematical models of the immune response to viral and bacterial infections and coinfections. This lab is a dual dry/wet laboratory and uniquely generates robust data sets to train and validate model predictions.

EDUCATION: Ph.D. in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Skill in viral and bacterial infection and immune response modeling.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct interdisciplinary research in these areas. 
  • Skill in model development, including formulation, implementation, and validation of computational approaches. 
  • Knowledge of parameter estimation techniques and skill in applying data-driven modeling methods to complex biological data. 
  • Proficient programming skills in Matlab and/or Python, with the ability to write efficient, well-documented code. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present research clearly to scientific and non-scientific audiences. 
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team. 
  • Skill in mentoring and providing guidance to graduate students, technicians, or undergraduate researchers.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may frequently be required to work weekends and evenings. May require occasional overnight travel.

  • Designs, implements, and analyzes novel dynamical mathematical and computational models.
  • Prepares manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and contributes to grant proposals. 
  • Utilizes models to generate new hypotheses and help design new experiments.  
  • Develop independent research skills and career trajectory. 
  • Collaborate with other lab members, faculty, staff, and external colleagues on research projects.
  • Presents findings at lab meetings, seminars, and conferences. 
  • Maintains accurate records and ensures reproducibility of results. 
  • Assists with progress reports and manages research resources responsibly. 
  • Provides technical guidance and mentorship to students.
