Commissioning Engineer

Location: Denver, CO (Hybrid)

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Commissioning Engineer to join a growing engineering consulting team focused on delivering high-performance, energy-efficient commercial buildings. This role is ideal for a technically strong, self-motivated professional who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, managing client relationships, and taking ownership of projects from inception through completion.

The successful candidate will work closely with building owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and project teams to ensure building systems perform as intended while supporting sustainability, operational efficiency, and long-term building performance.

This is a hybrid position, offering a balance of office collaboration, remote work, and project site visits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage commissioning projects from contract award through warranty completion.

  • Lead project planning, execution, scheduling, budgeting, and financial performance.

  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Coordinate commissioning activities with design teams, contractors, and building owners.

  • Review design documents and provide commissioning input during design and construction phases.

  • Perform and oversee commissioning activities for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and related building systems.

  • Verify that building systems are installed, tested, and operating according to project requirements.

  • Prepare commissioning documentation, reports, functional performance testing procedures, and project deliverables.

  • Identify system deficiencies and work collaboratively with project teams to resolve issues.

  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor by providing practical recommendations and solutions.

  • Mentor and coordinate work assigned to support staff.

  • Assist with proposal development and support business development initiatives as needed.

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality, schedules, and budgets.

  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve project execution, client satisfaction, and overall team performance.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent industry experience.

  • 1-5 years of experience working with commercial buildings in one or more of the following areas:

    • Building commissioning

    • Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing (MEP) engineering

    • Building operations

    • Construction engineering

    • MEP coordination

    • Mechanical or electrical contracting

  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Understanding of commercial building systems and high-performance building practices.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with clients, contractors, consultants, and internal team members.

  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities while meeting project deadlines.

Work Environment & Travel
  • Hybrid work schedule with a combination of office, remote, and construction site work.

  • During the first 90 days, additional office and site presence is expected to support onboarding.

  • After onboarding, the schedule typically consists of approximately 2 days in the office and 3 days working remotely or at project sites.

  • Occasional travel is required, averaging once per month, including overnight travel of 1-3 nights.

  • Most project work is regional and can typically be completed as day trips.
