Job description

Job Summary

Responsible for moving and staging trailers on the Distribution Center yard. Moves trailers occasionally to and from local offsite lots or trailers left on public streets.If selected for this position, the company will run a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) report. A requirement of this position is an acceptable MVR report.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

  • Safely moves trailers to and from shipping and receiving doors. Safely moves trailers to and from designated parking areas on the yard.

  • Drives tractor-trailer within yard or within short distances outside of yard, applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations and skill in maneuvering on the road and on company premises.

  • Upholds and follows yard safety and compliance regulations. Monitors activity in the yard and at the gate into the yard.

  • Performs all required safety checks (i.e. pre/post trip) including inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Inspects tractor/truck and trailer to ensure they meet company safety standards and takes appropriate action. Reports all safety issues and/or required repairs.

  • Follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies. Immediately reports any and all safety hazards.

  • Ensures that tractor, trailer and freight are appropriately locked and/or secured at all times.

  • Performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keep trailers clear and clean.

Nature and Scope

  • Refers complex, unusual problems to supervisor.

  • Under general supervision, exercises some judgment in accordance with well-defined policies, procedures, and techniques. Work typically involves regular review of output by a senior coworker or supervisor.

Work Environment

  • Typically located in a comfortable environment but with regular exposure to factors that may cause noticeable discomfort or a moderate risk of accident or illness, such as temperature extremes, moving machinery, loud noises, and fumes.

  • Requires intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting, and maneuvering material or equipment that may be heavy (50+ pounds) or awkward.

  • Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time.

Education and Experience

  • HS Diploma or GED strongly preferred.

  • Specialized skills training/certification may be required.

  • Generally 2-5 years of experience in area of responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating commercial vehicles, yard tractors, straight trucks, or other equipment used to transport and stage trailers.

  • Experience safely moving, backing, and positioning trailers in a yard, warehouse, or distribution center environment.

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with applicable endorsements, when required for the position.

  • Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and demonstrated commitment to safe driving practices.

  • Experience operating forklifts, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment; forklift certification preferred.

  • Familiarity with warehouse, distribution center, shipping, receiving, or loading operations.

  • Strong attention to safety, including adherence to DOT regulations, equipment inspections, and established operating procedures.

  • Ability to work outdoors, perform physically demanding tasks, and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Availability to work the required schedule of Monday-Friday, 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM
