Description of Duties:
  • Independently and/or collaboratively formulate and perform static structural, fatigue and fracture analysis of aerospace components, assemblies, and systems
  • Support generation of static, dynamic, and fatigue test plans and procedures, special test equipment, and sensor placement.
  • Perform data analysis and model correlation.
  • Work with design engineers to help drive weight optimized, structural sufficient parts
  • Generate formal documentation such as technical memorandums, analysis reports, design and development books, or product manuals
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment with changing needs and requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Derivation of vehicle load paths and reaction loads using free body diagrams
  • Familiarity with classical aerospace sizing methods (ex: Bruhn, Niu, Roark)
  • Knowledge of, and skills in the use of 1st principals to perform 1st order static structural analysis by hand
  • Demonstrated proficiency with one or more of the following analysis codes: NX FEMAP, PATRAN, Nastran, ANSYS, ABAQUS
  • Proficiency in FEM modeling techniques such as boundary conditions, mid-surfacing, element types, structural idealization, bolted connections, contact, verification methods, etc
  • Proficient in structural analysis of aerospace system and components, including linear and nonlinear static analysis, stability analysis, Sine and random vibration analysis, shock and impact analysis
  • Analysis of structural stability (local buckling phenomenon, global buckling, crippling) by classical hand calculation and FEM.
  • Bolted joint hand calculations (bolt preload, joint stiffness, shear-tension interaction, insert pull-out, etc) per NASA-STD-5020
  • Support internal/external design reviews, technical interchange meetings (TIMs), preliminary/critical design reviews (PDR/CDR)
  • Knowledge and experience with the design and development of spacecraft, spacesuits, aircraft, military, or other relevant vehicles, systems, subsystems, assemblies, and/or components
  • Knowledge and experience in the engineering product development lifecycle, ranging from requirements development through design, manufacture, test, and operations
  • Skills in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Project)
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both written and spoken form
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive work relationships; have creativity, flexibility and resourcefulness; have discriminating judgment, tact and sense of humor
  • Ability to evaluate Junior Engineer's designs and concepts and provide expert advice that will enhance the resulting designs and to train junior engineers in their duties

Desired Experience:
Experience in one of the following discipline areas: Life Support System Design, Crew Systems Design, Crew Cabin Design, Mechanical Design, or Mechanical Analysis.
  • Desired: Excellent understanding of fatigue and fracture mechanics principles, working knowledge of fatigue/fracture (AFGRO/NASGRO), spectra development, NDE methods, fail safe vs. safe life, NASA-STD-5019
  • Desired: Expertise in modeling and simulation of electronics components and associated failure
  • Desired: Expertise with analysis of welded joints
  • Desired: Expertise with mechanisms including bearings, valves, motors, rotating joints, gears.
  • Desired: Experience in direct SolidWorks CAD manipulation for analysis model and team collaboration purposes.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Aerospace Engineering or equivalent field and 0-2 years
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent field and 1-2 years of industry experience with system and/or hardware analysis and design.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent field and 0-1 years of industry experience with system and/or hardware analysis and design.
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Bio-mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or equivalent field.
  • US Citizen or US permanent resident
