What do outside machinists do?

Outside machinists install, maintain, and repair large industrial equipment such as engines, pumps, and turbines, often working outdoors or in industrial settings. They use tools like wrenches, hoists, and welding equipment, and may need certifications in rigging or welding. Their work involves troubleshooting mechanical issues and ensuring equipment operates safely and efficiently.

What is an Outside Machinist?

An Outside Machinist is a skilled tradesperson who assembles, installs, maintains, and repairs mechanical equipment and machinery, typically in shipyards, industrial plants, or manufacturing facilities. Unlike inside machinists who work primarily on stationary machines in a shop, outside machinists perform their work on-site, often on large-scale equipment such as ship engines, turbines, or pumps. Their tasks may involve reading blueprints, aligning machinery, and using a variety of hand and power tools. This role requires precision, technical knowledge, and the ability to work in diverse and sometimes challenging environments.

Are machinists still in demand?

Outside machinists are still in demand in industries such as manufacturing, shipbuilding, and maintenance, where skilled trades are essential. The job requires technical skills, knowledge of tools and machinery, and often certifications, with steady employment prospects due to ongoing industry needs.

What Does an Outside Machinist Do?

An outside machinist performs general maintenance on ships and submarines, including nuclear powered vessels. Outside of nuclear work and subsafe machinery, an outside machinist’s duties can entail performing any necessary service task on a ship or submarine. Your responsibilities are vast in this career. You can be asked to perform almost any work on any of the marine vessels in the shipyard. You must be well-versed in using a wide variety of equipment. For example, you may perform assembly and installation of ship and submarine components such as motors, propulsion machinery, and any associated equipment or components. You can lay out passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces as needed. You install ship components like steering gear, pumps, or propelling machinery. In short, you do whatever work is necessary on marine vessels and need the vast skills that go along with that.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Outside Machinist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outside Machinist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with tools and machinery, often backed by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with blueprints, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and alignment tools like dial indicators and micrometers is commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate equipment installation and maintenance, supporting safety and operational efficiency in industrial environments.

What are some typical challenges an Outside Machinist might face on the job, and how can they be addressed?

Outside Machinists often work in dynamic, sometimes harsh environments such as shipyards or industrial plants, where tasks may include installing, repairing, or maintaining large mechanical systems. Common challenges include working in confined spaces, exposure to varying weather conditions, and handling complex machinery with precision. Safety is a top priority, so being vigilant and following strict protocols is essential. Effective communication and teamwork with engineers, welders, and other trades are crucial for troubleshooting and completing projects efficiently.

Can a CNC machinist make 100k a year?

A CNC machinist can potentially earn $100,000 annually with advanced skills, experience, and working in high-demand industries or locations. Achieving this salary often requires proficiency with CNC programming, certifications, and working overtime or in supervisory roles.
