Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Clinical Leader and/or Director of Surgical Services, the peri-anesthesia nurse assesses, plans, organizes, evaluates and executes all aspects of patient care for assigned patients in the Pre-Op and Post Anesthesia Care Units (PACU).
Position Highlights:
  • Starting Rate: $32.75 + per hour (commensurate with experience)

Key Responsibilities:
• Utilizes the nursing process to provide quality patient care according to established standards of care which includes planning, implementing evaluating and adjusting plan of care, and discharge planning based on expected patient outcomes.
• Admits, monitors, transfers, and discharges patients
• Completes ongoing patient assessment and documents according to policy
• Completes nursing assessment
• Participates in the development of patient plan of care to include patient goals, evaluations and interventions
• Monitors and makes appropriate interventions in the PACU
• Reports symptoms and significant changes in patient's condition per protocol.
• Assesses, collaborates and coordinates patient's discharge planning needs and readiness for discharge with other members of the care team.
• Demonstrates appropriate application of age specific standards, policies and procedures and guidelines in caring for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Follows age specific standards in administering medication, performing treatments and procedures, and monitoring level of altered states of consciousness based on patient's age.
Incorporates cultural and developmental needs into plan of care.
• Provides documentation of patient care in the patient record according to established guidelines.
• Reviews preoperative/postoperative physician orders to determine patient needs.
• Obtains/Reviews patient's medical history for accuracy upon admission.
• Reviews and assesses diagnostic data (or absence thereof) and collaborates with physicians and other health care workers to provide appropriate follow-up actions.
• Reviews knowledge base, and level of understanding of patient and family members, or caregiver.
• Collaborates with anesthesia providers and surgery staff to allow time for required preoperative care and to avoid surgical delays.
• Demonstrates competency in performing IV starts, electrocardiograms, lab draws, and prepping patients for surgery.
• Ensuring that the patient's chart is comprehensive and all paperwork is completed and signed.
• In PACU, nurse will monitor heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and respiration, as well as managing the patient's pain, and nausea if applicable, assess dressings, and level of consciousness, according to policy.
• Administers conscious sedation and documents according to policy, as needed
• Assists physicians with procedures as needed.
• Carries out Infection Control policies and procedures.
• Obtains/Maintains ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire
• Carries out duties to prepare department for next day of work
• Performs other duties as indicated
Qualifications
• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with current licensure as a registered nurse in the state of North Carolina (or compact states).
• BCLS certification required. ACLS, and PALS required within 6 months of hire.
• Knowledge of current trends/techniques in nursing appropriate to the Pre-OP and PACU areas.
• Some experience in PRE-OP and/or PACU setting. Will also consider Critical Care nursing experience.
• All of the above plus 2 years' experience in the PRE-OP and/or PACU Setting is preferred.
