What is an OT internship?

An OT (Occupational Therapy) internship is a hands-on training experience for students or recent graduates pursuing a career in occupational therapy. Interns work under the supervision of licensed occupational therapists to gain practical skills in assessing and treating patients with physical, developmental, or cognitive challenges. Responsibilities may include assisting with therapy sessions, documenting patient progress, and learning how to create effective treatment plans. This internship helps develop clinical knowledge, communication skills, and professional experience required for certification and future employment in the field.

What kinds of hands-on experiences can I expect during an OT internship?

As an OT Intern, you’ll typically gain direct experience by assisting with patient assessments, planning and facilitating therapeutic activities, and documenting patient progress under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist. You may also participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and observe or contribute to the development of individualized treatment plans. The variety and depth of hands-on experience can vary by setting, but most internships ensure you’re exposed to essential clinical and administrative aspects of occupational therapy. These opportunities are designed to help you apply classroom knowledge to real-life patient care, boost your confidence, and enhance your professional skill set.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the OT internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OT (Occupational Therapy) Intern, you should have a foundational knowledge of human anatomy, rehabilitation principles, and a current enrollment in or completion of an accredited occupational therapy program. Familiarity with therapy documentation software, adaptive equipment, and relevant HIPAA and safety regulations is beneficial. Strong interpersonal communication, empathy, and organizational skills help interns build rapport with patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams. These competencies ensure safe, ethical, and impactful support of patients' rehabilitation and meaningful participation in daily activities.
