Job description

Job Title: Senior z/OS Systems Programmer
Location: Chandler, AZ
Type: 18 Month Contract
Rate: $65-$70/hour W2

Position Overview: We are seeking a Senior z/OS Systems Programmer to support a large enterprise mainframe environment undergoing a hardware upgrade from IBM z16 to z17. This role will focus on core system programming activities including system configuration, debugging, performance analysis, and supporting the upgrade and stabilization of the z/OS platform.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on IBM systems programmer with deep experience in z/OS internals, assembler, dump analysis, and SMP/E configuration, and who has supported large-scale enterprise mainframe environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support the z/OS platform during a major hardware upgrade (z16 z17).
  • Perform core systems programming activities including configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the z/OS environment.
  • Use Assembler and system debugging tools to analyze dumps and diagnose system-level issues.
  • Manage SMP/E installations, maintenance, and configuration of system software.
  • Support and maintain z/OS UNIX System Services (USS) environments.
  • Utilize REXX scripting to automate operational and system tasks.
  • Work with HMC (Hardware Management Console) for system management and troubleshooting.
  • Analyze system performance and stability within a large enterprise mainframe environment.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams to ensure smooth system upgrades, enhancements, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Provide clear documentation and communication across technical teams.
Required Qualifications
  • Senior-level experience as an IBM z/OS Systems Programmer.
  • Strong experience with IBM mainframe hardware environments including z16 (experience with z17 highly preferred).
  • Expertise in Assembler programming and system dump analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with SMP/E installation, maintenance, and configuration.
  • Experience with IBM debugging tools and system diagnostics.
  • Proficiency with REXX scripting.
  • Experience managing systems through HMC.
  • Knowledge of z/OS UNIX System Services (USS).
  • Experience working in large-scale enterprise mainframe environments.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated history of consistent projects and stable tenure.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Additional experience with HMC debugging and advanced troubleshooting.
